USB interface or old midi in/out?

Yeah, last time I bought MIDI cables the price horrified me. 2 x 3m cables was close to $50. Not even in stock locally, so I had to buy online (though this is NZ) and the quality didn't seem to be anything superior. USB cables are everywhere and a few $s only. Though to be fair, the USB-B cables are harder to find, but still cheap. If I had to repurchase all of my MIDI cables it would be a huge outlay.

There is nothing more annoying than a USB cable that keeps disconnecting. Happens all the time at work

Bought one of these, and a bagful of USB cables. Cheap & cheerful, but hopefully should do the job.

Interestingly the supplier had some pretty long USB cables. One of 'em was 50' or something ridiculous. I thought USB had a limit of 5m or somesuch? Or do they put some gizmo into the cable to extend it?
I seem to be buying lots of general studio gear recently that doesn't make noise
. I need to buy some proper gear that makes funny noises...

Can you still reliably do MIDI over USB via a USB hub? I thought hubs were supposed to be a bit dodgy? Without one of them, I see no benefit in USB as it still means repatching all the time. If hubs are workable I should properly consider USB nowadays. I can see benefits, such as the Behringer TD3 sequencer has an app via USB which is better than the silly onboard 303 job (anything is better than a 303 sequencer)
What Chip Controller is reported of the ACASIS ? Via VL817 , Realtek RTS 5411, Genesys 3523 ?
