As Bob Katz mentioned, Mastering/Mixing is the art of compromise. Listening to a lot of hip hop songs I notice that's what happens, you can have your thumpy bass or thumpy kick, but not both at the same time. You'll need to compromise sometimes. A lot of new hip hop are just using 808's, it is a bit lazy I think, but it offers you the sub bass and thump at the same time, and that's why hip hoppers love it.

Compress the mix to bring up the bass in the spaces between the drums. Oldest trick in the book.

you can allso play with the attack of the bass so that it comes in JUST after the attack of the kick
