If I want philosophy I don't go to musicians.
If I want poetry I don't go to musicians.
Nor for political or social commentary.
I could never understand why people think musicians are expert or even competent in these areas.

I go to musicians for music.

reminds me of a cartoon, in which a man is listening to someone play a flute. When the music stops, he says "That was beautiful - what does it mean?". Without hesitation, the flautist plays the tune again.

I want massmusic to have messages .. good ones of course.
I´d love to see a "new" need for bands and artists having to say something .. cause i think its about time.

famous musicians are in the positions to be heard, and i want them to use this opportunity. i mean .. where´s the resistance? i cant see it .. and musicians being featured here and there have the chance to do something ..

when i look at all these lyrics the radio or mtv is spitting out .. :help: .. its like recipes. songs about love being written by some clever lyric-writers, using always the same phrases and words ..

and these "hooray, lets dance and shake your ass"-lyrics .. wow.

what a pitty .. :(

the 60´s and early 70´s showed that music can have an impact, and i´d be happy to see such attention, payed by the listeners, again.

basically it all goes down to *whom* - i.e. to what audience is a certain masterpiece dedicated.

MacDonalds appeals to carnivores.

Risking a flame (of love) here, basically anybody who eats animal leftovers silently supports machanisms of slavery, killing *in the name of*, treating life as a merchandise. and so on and on.

then again, this system has a vast *market share* on the planet ...

bon voyage, kavarians.

'I couldn't help it,' said Five, in a sulky tone; 'Seven jogged my elbow.'

On which Seven looked up and said, 'That's right, Five! Always lay the blame on others!'

You'd better not talk!' said Five. 'I heard the Queen say only yesterday you deserved to be beheaded!'

'What for?' said the one who had spoken first.

'That's none of your business, Two!' said Seven.

'Yes, it is his business!' said Five, 'and I'll tell him--it was for bringing the cook tulip-roots instead of onions.'

Seven flung down his brush, and had just begun 'Well, of all the unjust things--' when his eye chanced to fall upon Alice, as she stood watching them, and he checked himself suddenly: the others looked round also, and all of them bowed low.

'Would you tell me,' said Alice, a little timidly, 'why you are painting those roses?'

i can only argue out of my very own personal point of view, and that is:

making music, to me, means dealing with myself. with all the goodies and shities i call my own, the parts of my personality.
and part of this is being a human being within others, surrounded by people not being me.
so when i make music i try to put my reflections into the sound, and so i try to do when i write lyrics.

its not that i think that my messages are superb or something, but honestly i´d wish to hear more music where i can clearly see and hear that the makers of the music care for their very own authenticity.

please don´t think that i expect everything to be full of meaning and sense, but the sheer mass of plastic and music being written after recipes annoys me ..

it should be more balanced .. :)

music CAN help .. to encourage people, to give them the feeling not being alone in this world. it can help them going through shitty times, to come out better than before.
sure, this music does exist. and there are many many unknown bands and artists dealing with it. but all in all, in the bigger picture (think about the kids!) it seems as if messagemusic doesnt play a big role in media these days.

I'm not sure I agree.
As a musician you can express an opinion without being an expert in the areas mentioned.
Your opinion could still be valid.
There are a lot of bad poets and politicians etc, also.
I mean, I belive you CAN be a good musician AND a good poet/philosopher.
Hey, even a good politician. :)

it's probably too early for me to be trying to make the case..I suppose I appreciate that there might be a message in what I'm listening to, I just don't want to be hit over the head with it.

well said,

I have the same ideas about music.

But maybe I´m too old for nowadays music market.
I grew up with listening to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen and ..... many more of these.

So I think the medium music is perfect to carry messages to other people.
And many songs you hear today on the radio are just a waist of time and energy.

And I know there are lotsa folks doing good and meaningful music.

Why not take the chance when writing lyrics to say something from your deep soul and your own experiences to bring it to the light of day and to share it with others. That can help the people.

And I do mostly music without words, but I have always in mind I want to touch the listener with the sounds and help to make them feel a bit, just a tiny bit better.
