I tried with both note off and on, but as far as I could tell the decay knob didn't have an audible effect on the samples. I tried both short and long samples.

ok, sorry, I explain better,

Decay knob controls the time the sample volume fade away in two cases:

1) playing by MIDI and NOTE OFF button is on
2) playing by DK+ step sequencer, only when the sample
is retriggered on the same track, so Deacy is the rate at which the next trigger overlap the deacy of the previous sound (on the same track)
