How many 4 minute, 24-bit audio tracks can you keep in RAM?

in 1GB:

1024^3 / (3*2*44100*4*60) = 17

(assuming it's 44khz stereo)

Yeah, but That's assuming you have a full 1G free on your system. The OS is going to eat memory, your app, etc.

I can't assume anything else anyway, you know what memory you have left, not me.
My point was: get an extra 1GB, and that's at least what you'll be able to load while working the exact same way as before.

Actually you can also replace the *3 by *2 or *4 depending on the sequencer (I don't think most are supporting 24bit natively).
