Not since I had an Athlon800 system. At the time I was hardly using any plugin instruments in either Fruity [it didn't support them yet] or ORION [probably only MDA-JX10] so I got a reasonable comparison and I saw no CPU advantage in one or another.

There's good stuff in most of em i reckon - some I personally don't find appealing for various reasons, & some of em i get put off of by gushing fanboy antics & overzealous developer hijacking etc.
f**k you! Your'e an idiot and don't have a clue what you're talkin' about.

There, do you feel better now?

I don't know... Reason seems to be the most CPU friendly Soft Synth I've ever used.

It's been a while since I've tried Orion but it seemed a tad CPU intensive at the time.

Do you find that the native Soft Synths in Orion are better optimized than 3rd party VSTi/DXis? and has this been a recent development that I have perhaps missed?

Since we're talking "ideal", why not add:

Copy protection of Sonar (just a serial number).

Huge, printed manual of Sonar (and Logic, I think).

Post

1) Nuendo's VST compatibility, well implemented PDC, advanced MIDI processing inc MIDI FX, excellent drum editor and cross platform compatibility
2) Logic's HyperEdit, automation, and efficiency of screen usage/screensets/linked editors
3) Tracktion's modularity
4) Sonar's stability
5) Live's malleable audio and performance features.
6) Podium's 'device' abstractions

I would say Logic's built in instruments/effects (especially EVD6 and EVB3), except I'd rather have those as discrete plugins so I could use them in whatever host I liked.

Sonar with:

-Saved history (To any devs who might be reading, pleasepleasepleaseplease  It could have an on and off option for those who wanna save disk space...)
-The ability to put envelopes "inside" of a clip; this would make arranging so much easier
-You should be able to save your plugin manager settings... Whenever you run the VST adapter, they're instantly erased. This make it completely useless. Thankfully 3rd parties (read: whytrabbit) have provided us with a workaround.
-Live esque drag and drop timestreching
-Timestretch by X samples
-Fruity's drum sequencer (but with finite swing values).
-Speed up and slow down audio clips (without time streching).
-Something like Reason's combinator, with savable presets.

Oh and uh, TDM, RTAS, logic, powercore, and UAD-1 plugin support

orion plat plus ext does me for now
dunno what else the world has to offer really

1) Midi editing ability of Muzys (include Cubase, Logic, Sonar here also).
2) Copy protection of EnergyXT or Muzys
3) Modularity and plug-in ability of EnergyXT
4) Developer of either EnergyXT or Muzys :D
5) Automation of Orion/FL Studio
6) Snazziness of audio handling like Sonar or equivalent
7) Growing mixer like Orion with the features of Logic
8) Sonar's MFX plug-in handling
9) Muzys inbuilt synth/sampler engine (with some of the features of EnergyXT's sampler).
10) KeyMap player like Muzys integrating into EnergyXT's modular environment
11) Arrangement/Playlist handling like EnergyXT (when it's finished)
12) Small footprint of EnergyXT
13) Price of EnergyXT :D
14) Integration of external devices/hardware like Muzys

keeping it simple ...

(and - heehee - for this week only maybe)

- everything tracktion currently has to offer (and everything T2 will offer)
- the audio handling and clip automation from live4

... nothing fancy or over-complicated (this second issue is one factor that saw me drift away from energyXT and back to tracktion recently) ... that would suit me fine

BONES wrote:1. I don't like Traktion's UI at all.
2. All hosts have low CPU hit - they don't actually make much sound. If I only use native instruments, I'm sure ORION uses no more CPU than Reason and is at least as stable.
3. ORION's automation is good enough
4. Nothing wrong with ORION's flexibility and I don't need MIDI [probably just as well]
5. ORION's internal link to your editor of choice makes it hard to beat
6. I have eXT, can't find any use for it though
7. ORION's instruments are awesome
8. Spectral edit looks pretty but I don't see how its useful [its been in Cool Edit for 10 years].
9. Agreed
10. Use eXT if you need that krap
11. I'll take ORION's low-CPU instruments and effects any day.

I don't need to dream, i got it all going on for real.
1. I don't either, but it is uncluttered and easy (since it doesn't have much to conceal :P)
2. No they don't have the same cpu hit, and that even without going into stuff like e.g. SX keeping all plugs enabled during a track, while logic or dp only when in use.
3. Good enough != best : We are describing the ideal host, not the best one around. Why settle ?
4. I'll give you this one : It's your ideal sequencer - you don't need midi, that's great.
5. No it doesn't. Total integration is different. Still the orion workaround is not bad.
6. Give you this one as well. Horses for courses kinda thing
7. I'm not convinced - Sorry - Big fat IMHO
8. If you don't then fine - I do.
9. Well we can at least both happily hate steinberg
10. There we go again spoiling integration.
11. I'll take the quality of these compared to orion's ones even if i have to bounce every second or so. Again IMHO

Just one last thing. ORION is not god ....

I am :P

My perfect sequencer combines multiple(18)live inputs for my hardwaresynths&fx with a great audio-recording&editing engine plus very good sounding softwareinstruments&fx plus all the tricky midi-editing for my daily work..
and in the end I like to configure it for my needs and can make a quite complex setup very easy to control..

..so that´s Logic for me..

Well if it had PDC and was not on Mother of all Evil platform :P (i mean come on what did satan give Eve - Ask jobs if you don't know, i don't think he'll remember giving it to her but the name might ring a bell :D) it would pretty much be my IDEAL sequencer.
