haydxn,

The m-audio site makes no mention that the 44's i/o is balanced, but they do on the 192 card. Are you sure they are balanced i/o?

Here's a question-- since they're both from the Delta family, will I be able to simultaneously use a 2496 and a 192 at the same time, with ASIO drivers?

Greg
I think I read somewhere that the current ASIO standard only allows for one audio card ? (I'm really not 100% sure on this, pls correct me if I'm wrong.)

The web page only says: "4 x 4 analog I/O " No mention is made of balanced i/o, whereas the 192 page does mention balanced i/o.

Delta 44 & 66 cards do have balanced IO (TRS jacks)

(I use a 66)

Ok, I sit corrected!

It is strange that they mention balanced I/O for one product (192) but not others. Strange...

:) i wouldn'er said if i we're gonna be lyin'!

and just in case you're still unsure,
http://www.m-audio.com/images/en/callou ... lta_44.jpg
(it does say this here also!). presumeably by balanced/unbalanced it means that it's not a problem to connect an unbalanced cable to it.
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

Thanks for pointing to that image haydxn. You might have just sold me on the delta44.

I don't use a mixer - could I route output from T to both pairs of outputs - one set on the 44 going to my monitors, and another set to drive a set of headphones, or would I need to put a headphone amp in between the 44 outs and a set of cans? I track in the same room I mix in, so I need phones for cueing while recording vocals, acoustic guitars, etc.

You would need a headphones amp..

Post

the drivers have surprisingly flexible (tho initially confusing) routing/mixing capabilities, which will allow you to create most imaginable routing combinations. but, you will ultimately need a headphone amp (or a device with headphone amplification in, such as a mixer) if you wish to use headphones. the outputs are line level; you can choose from three 'standards' of line level depending on the gear you're connecting to them, but they are not amplified for headphone use.

You may laugh, but my SB Live Platinum card, with the Live Drive I/O panel seems like maybe it will do just fine in the new PC!!! I use KX project drivers which automatically mutes the monitors when the cans are plugged in, Midi I/O is right there, Line level in is right there on the front.

Maybe I'll opt for an Audigy Platinum (please don't snicker) to keep things simple.

You're partly right-- but the limitation can be overcome by multiple devices sharing the same drivers and therefore communicating with the host as if it's actually one device. I know certain kinds of cards can be 'stacked' and therefore used together, and I'm wondering if multiple cards from the Delta family qualify because of the universal Delta driver?

Anybody? Anybody? Beuller? (I could always Google or write support I guess. <laff>)

HERE is the official guide on how to do a delta multi-card configuration. at the bottom it explains that XP/2000 are able to sync the cards without an SP/DIF cable, and so it is possible to stack 44s in those OSs.

Creative cards are designed to handle game sound, with music making coming as an afterthought. If you want rock-solid drivers, low latencies, good audio quality, and free choice of the sample-rate you use, my advice would be to buy a card designed for the job..
