What are mastering effects?

Thanks everyone for your help! I"m going through the articles on that link, and I guess I'll reread some old tutorials I have about mastering. I hope they help.

Enhancers, reverbs and the such belongs to tracks and not the master track, imo
They sure have a place in the music, but if you're music is lacking some sparkle, fix it on the specific instruments (no need to add sparkle to the kick drum) instead of on the master.

Its always better to leave the mastering to someone else. I never master my own work as my ears are already tired from hearing it hundreds of times during the composing/mixing process. Ask a friend with a good ear to do it for you, or if you can, hire a good masterer. U'd be surprised how much the sound improves with the professional touch, and they even work with you on the price and adjust to your budget. I bought some of the waves stuff, was broke for a while because of it, and the sad part is that I still havent been able to learn how to use them correctly.
