Can we use the mastering effects such as multiband dynamics, exciter, stereo imaging and the master reverb during the mixing stage? If so, why are some effects called master effects, such as the master reverb, etc...

there are effects working in an additive signal processing. these are mostly NOT mastereffects 'cause they're adding frequencies.

So is the whole thing about adding and subtracting frequencies?
Would you please elaborate alittle bit more. I'm kind of newbie to frequency issues

ok,...well its quite difficult to explain...its like grammar.
for example: enhancer is adding frequencies to the sound, so its not recommended for pre- or even mastering. (a vitalizer does better here). for the compressors and eq's: often there are multiband comps and eqs that fit more the needs of mastering, so they're often called mastering eq's or comps...

oh and its not recommended to use exciters in mastering... at least for vinyl production. if you do too much tweaking there are unneaded high and low freq's added...

You can use 'Mastering' tools during the mix stage as much as you, your wallet and your CPU can take. But using 'Mix' tools during the mastering stage is considered bad form.

I don't even think I do mastering. All I do is use eq and compressor on the master bus. Is that mastering?

hehe well in a way yes it is. if you got good ears the product could end in a good or bad "mastering"I don't even think I do mastering. All I do is use eq and compressor on the master bus. Is that mastering?

If you charge $1,000 a track it sure is.stefancrs wrote:All I do is use eq and compressor on the master bus. Is that mastering?
These days Mastering and Marketing both start with the letter 'M', a coincidence? I think not. To me mastering means vinyl. Anything else is just a multi-band comp/brick wall limiter sucking the dynamic life-force out of the music, with a little 'sparkly' EQ for flava.

right mandolarian.
but for vinyl prod. you will need mastering...caus' you gotta know which freqencies you can press on laquer and which not.. otherways its just cutted out at the pressing plant.. mostly without taking care of your sound...

enhancer is adding frequencies to the sound, so its not recommended for pre- or even mastering.
When can I use the enhancer then?
So what is the difference between the multiband and the normal comps and eqs?often there are multiband comps and eqs that fit more the needs of mastering, so they're often called mastering eq's or comps...

with multiband eqs and comps you can in a way choose the frequencies you want the effect to process
enhancer: you can use it, but dont turn it to the max!
