MDA Stereo. It's free, simple and adjustable. I use on mono sources. Works great.

Without a plugin:

Copy the original track to a 2nd track.

Hard pan each track; one left, one right.

Change the start time on the 2nd track by a click or two. Offset time matters quite a bit. Experiment.

To broaden the image, independently (on either the right or left channel at a time) employ some of the eq and compression tricks mentioned earlier in the thread.

At least this is what I do, but I've recently downloaded the Betabugs plug and I've got to give that a try.

I only have one mic, so I do this quite a bit on vocals and acoustic guitar.
