Cant agree enough about Live, especially for guitar players (like me!).
The best thing for me is I can set up short clips of beats, jam along for as long as I want, record the whole thing, and not have to decide in advance how long I wanted the track, set loop points, etc.

Project 5 is similar to Reason...but I think version 2 has audio recording. You might want to chech Cakewalk's website to find out.
Cubase is good...even the LE version. How about Pro Tools? With M-powered...works with most M-audio sound device.

have to add another voice in support of tracktion ...
... it may not have the best loop handling but you now get RMIV and its MIDI loops in the box which takes away some of the need to timestretch audio drumloops to play along to (plus the version of amplitude in there might go well with your needs as a guitarist too) ...

Both Tracktion & Live are very easy to get too grips with, but also very powerful in there own rights.
Personally I have come to prefer live, excellent for looping & extemporising with different variations on a theme etc.
Tracktions modular rack concept is great, & it (unlike the present incarnation of Live) supports PDC (though not in all cases, i.e. inside racks).
I would also recommend looking at ext (to complement whatever host you end up using, i'm thinking of getting it to use together with live), as it's cheap, yet adds a great deal of functionality.

Traction is very quick with its uncluttered interface. It does not have all the options of bigger hosts but what it has is enough. Certainly you will like audio in T, no other sequencer comes close to it in quickness. However (as others said) Traction could have few things better - for example support for loops is just basic, it lacks more sophisticated midi functions and mixer less paradigm might be confusing.
Summing it up - once you get used to Traction you won't tolerate anything else. Shortcomings are not fatal and there are workarounds. For sure go and try the demo but don't say we didn't warn you.

Orion or EnergyXT! (By the way, ask Jens, he loves Orion too
, and he has always good advice for you )
In fact downloading the Orion-demo isn't a bad thing. Automation is super-easy. Setting up things is super-easy. Included synths and effects are rather good. Tutorial is one of the best around. You might even go through it and learn about insert-Effects, send-effects, piano-rolls, audio-tracks, automation, which effects to use for what and how and so on - and afterwards go buy EnergyXT...or Orion.
To be honest, many say Fruityloops, other even CubaseSX3 which I dunno, but for a beginning it's too expensive and too complicated maybe.
Try several demos, and give any 30 minutes, and Orion and EnergyXT 60
Cheers Jens
. Nice sunny day, is it. And besides Orion, Bochum führt - schon abgestiegen - in Hamburg...Wieso so spät, frage ich Dich, großer Liebhaber des Fußballs?

Ey, today they had their last game in Bundesliga 1, premier league - next august they'll be again one down, 2.Bundesliga. How could you be so hard to write (edit: I had written RIGHT, hihi) that just at THIS day
WIR SIND ABGESTIEGEN.
But with 1-0 in Hamburg and last week 2-0 against Stuttgart.
As you love soccer this much, I had to tell you
(dreht sich um, heult wieder los)

snootles ... if you want to jam away against your own riffs and bass runs - including record at a slower tempo and speed it up later - then Live 4 is the only one that really works.
Auxbuss is dead right.
But Live 4 is pricey.
If lack of funds push you towards a cheaper sequencer, then Cubasis is a good option.
Consider:
- everything works, as is, out of the box
- it has lots of live audio record/edit/mix facilities
- great mixer
- it has a stunning upgrade path in SX3.
And you have the comfort that Cubase won't go bust, or quit to get a better job with someone else, or drop PC for Mac users, or forget to upgrade, or any of the other myriad reasons that can send a sequencer down the tubes
