I've been working on a home-brew Synthedit version..

short clip of Solomon Set in action

Its been an ongoing project ever since I recorded the samples from my old drummer (Leon 'Solomon' Neal) about 4 years ago..

.. I would really like to record fresh version actually, as these are all 16-bit (I have better mics now too!) but Leon lives in London these days, and my flat is a bit small for his kit.. :hihi: anyway, I'm quite pleased with the sound, although I think the kick drum dynamics need a bit more work..

I like the sound of that kit, and the tune ... wish my home recordings sounded that good

Need any beta testers for the Synthedit jobby? ;)

Yes it's all BFD.

I recorded this small "guitar player trying to play drums" to highlight the velocity response of the Yamaha drum pad.
Pay attention to the various snare shots.
There are regular hits, drag, flam and rim shots.

Now if I could only play the damn thing. :tantrum:

Me too! Premier 'Genista' with 13" Noble & Cooley main snare, and a funky little 10" soprano second snare (second half of clip) .. I sort of miss playing with him actually. :(

The SE plug is in a bit of a mess at the moment as I'm half-way through a re-vamp: I re-did both snare drums, but still need to work on the kick and toms.. every time I use the set in a track I tend to re-visit the plug and make some tweaks (actually this time its been a fairly drastic re-build!) as my aim is to be able to load it up and just add reverb.. I'll give you a nod when its more finished! ;)

You can disable the internal sounds and just use the MIDI OUT to trigger drums. (especially multi layered ones like BFD)
The velocity response on this thing is quite surprising though I recommend getting some good drums stick and not use the ones that came with the unit.
I still can not drum but I can "fake it" one hand at the time layering each drum one at a time.
I use MID-OX with MID-YOKE to create different maps for each "recording phase" of the layered drum kit.

The results are amazing.
There is nothing like "writing" a drum part for a specific song.
Using drum pads as oppose to keyboards gives you all king of ghost notes and a real "feel" of live drums.
I have not used a groove since I got this thing
I've picked up one of these now, and it is a lot of fun messing with it. I can do two limbs at a time, so snare and hi-hat/crash, or snare and kick, but can't quite get the three going at once. Yet. But it's definitely a lot of fun playing with it and getting "real" sounding drums. 'Course, midi editting afterwards helps ;)

I know this is all do-able on a keyboard, but i've been surprised how much more fun and more natural it is to do it on pads, and i'd fancy my chances at playing a wee bit of drums for real in future. Considering taking drum lessons to get a grip on the basics, not for real live playing, but just for home recording

If you can pick up something like this cheap, and you want the sound of "played" drums i'd highly recommend it. When i got it out of the box i spent four hours solid just hitting things and figuring out how to do rolls and (crap) fills and stuff. Lots and lots of fun

I'm keen on anything that will give life to my drum parts. Just about to move again, though, which is always an expense... *sigh*...

Have you tried MusicLabs drums tools plugin? Knowing that you construct your songs before recording (verse/chorus etc) I think it would really suit your music. And just playing with the sliders in the Slicy Drummer part can really bring a drum part alive and give it variation ... I really like it, but not quite got round to buying it yet. Used to use Slicy in Sonar, and it's good. But recently i'm trying to take the tempo from a rhythm guitar part, rather than trying to force the song to a rigid drum machine tempo, 'cos it seems to suck the life out of my tunes. Things sound loads better (to me), but it means i have to start playing drums a bit, as Tracktion can't do tempo mapping.

Personally I'd kill for a tempo mapping plugin ....
