I guess it all depends on your budget. From a practical standpoint, getting the Studio Pak, or even the new Ultra Pak, will give you more bang for the buck, than buying separately. If I was on a budget, I would get the Project Pak (with the free LA-2A), and then as soon as I could afford it, get the 1176LN, for $149.00. That would essentially give you the plugin equivalant, of the discontinued Mackie card. Be careful, aquiring UAD-1 plugins has been shown to be addictive.
I have (2) cards myself, and the entire current plugin suite. There are a bunch of new plugins coming down the pike, in the near future. It looks like I'll have to break out the 'ol credit card again.
I love the UAD-1 plugins, especially the vintage plugins, it is pretty easy to get a great professional sounding track. They ain't too shabby to look at, either 8) The first plugins I reach for when mixing, I use them in all my projects.
On their website, UA just added audio demo's, of all their plugins, in wav & .mp3 format, that you can stream or download, for your listening pleasure. Just click on the plugin that you are interested in and then click on the "Demos & Tips", to the left, when the screen changes, for that plugin:

the Plate is also fantastic - the cambidge it's not that good - it's good but there better EQs out.
Do need to say something about the Pultec?

The Boss CE-1 will be released, in the next 3.9 update, probably, by the end, of the month. The Dimension D, will be released later, in the summer or early fall, according to the most recent June issue, of the UA webzine.

I'd say you did the right thing :D

I didn't know GC sells used instruments (we don't have GC here anyway), or are there new Fenders in production?

In addition, if you buy additional cards later on, all of the plugins you have already purchased are set to run on the new cards. All you have to do is get a new registration file from UAD. It's a simple process.

IOW< if you have the ultra Pak, and you need a 2nd card, you just go buy a Studio Pak (the cheapest pak), install it, re-register, and all of your plugs will run on both/either card

Guitar Center actually sells a decent amount of used gear in their stores (amps, guitars, keys, etc), and will occasionally get some really nice pieces. The problem is they usually (not always) charge an arm and a leg more than some smaller stores would for this gear, but at $700 bucks for a Rhodes in great shape, I couldn't say no. I don't know why Fender isn't making new Rhodes, but it could always be a wierd liscencing thing or something (though it would be neat).

Ok back on topic...
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

Actually its because fender does not own the "rhodes" name plate anymore. There have been rumors of a brand new rhodes for a few years now, but I have a feeling that it wont take off, it is just too expensive these days to build electromechanical keyboards when you can make a digital model of one that is good enough for "most people"*

* of course I am not most people and in general dont like sampled rhodeses(but I will use mr ray)

so you can't buy the 2nd card without the plugins? :?

btw, did anyone hear rumors about UAD-2 this fall?

That's right. UA doesn't sell the card, on it's own, without any plugins. When you buy a 2nd card, you also get licenses for plugs you already have (assuming you get the Project Pak, which is the cheapest pak (thanks billybk1) since it doesn't make sense to buy a more expensive Pak which contains plugs you have already paid to license)

Basically, I think of it as UAD is giving the basic set of plugs (the ones that come with the P-Pak) for free, with charges for additional plugs. That's why the 2nd card costs the same as the 1st. :)

Theres one other way to look at buying the project pak first and then upgrading to studio or ultra later on. At least its the rationale I used. By buying the project pak, I get great plugins to use asap, plus I get an excellent introduction into the other plugins that UAD offer. Remeber, there is no way to demo UAD plugs except via card. Since you get a 14 day full on demo period with all the other plugs when you get the project pak, it gives you a chance to see which plugs you like and decide on whether to get the studio or ultra next time around. Since you start the demo period whenever you want for each plug, you can space them out and spend a good chunk of time with each. It doesnt cost anymore either way you go, ultra/studio then project pak or visa versa.

At least thats the rationale I used to make me feel good about getting the project pak cause I couldnt afford the others.
