Can't believe I forgot Squarepusher. "My Red Hot Car/Cock" is my fave dance 'anthem'.

I'm desperate for more modern intelligent dance music like this stuff.
I only know Aphex Twin from the list you wrote there.. But I would say Infected Mushroom and Hallucinogen/Sphongle would be good alternatives to trance related music with some intelligence in it..

I'm not sure what defines IDM (although i have listened to it for years....confused? i am :P )

But for intelligent electronic music i'd say my favs were

Michel Banabila (especially his cd spherics)
Gescom (another booth/brown (autechre) incarnation)
Max Tundra (he's a f**king genius. He does more with one track than the entire history of IDM.)
Neotropic (Mr. Brubaker's Strawberry Alarm Clock is priceless.)
Luke Vibert (aka - Wagon Christ.)
And who could forget Future Sound Of London

That's a very short list, but (imho) a good one.

Autechre is a good start

er, Pete Namlook/Fat Cat records??

Kid 606, DJ/Rupture, Lesser, Cex (general Tigerbeat6 folks)

Then of course, Grooverider, DJ Hype, Doc Scott, etc

one of my fave albums of this ilk would be boards of canadas music has a right to children...
Coldcut rock!! Even better if you here them DJ, talk about an eclectic set of records! 8)

EDIT: Autechre are spot on, in fact as mentioned earlier, anything on Warp Records should float your boat. (Side Note: I use to collect Warp on vinyl, had everything upto Warp18 then stopped for some reason? )

Kruder & Dorfmeister? 8) Intelligent, chilled out dub. If that's a genre. :?

Prefuse73 (Scott Herren) and his earlier guise Delarosa and Asora (check out the "Agony' album) wll give you a little more experimentation with harmony, melody and structure than most of the standard idm stuff - I've always been disappointed that most 'idm' , while breaking new boundaries with its sonic textures, remains so doggedly european in its chord structures, and leans towards techno in its rhythmic structures - with Herren's stuff you also get some jazz-related harmonies and even a bit of funk ... a little more 'intelligence' if you like :D

y'know, if you want something that is intelligent, you're just as well to checkout Pink Floyd, Tool and a shitload of other bands.

personally I think the new Gorillaz is a lot more "intelligent" sounding than a lot of the real underground "im glitchier than thou" shit which sounds like the new milleniums equivalent of hair rock guitar solos (aka wankfests).
Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good
