So far, he seems like he's sticking to that!

So, is it... (Dead?)

:P
No way, I use it all the time and love the textures and sounds I get with it. I think it will be around for a long time.

Tick did it right when he made Rhino...

It seems that only in the era of soft instruments do we have the concept that if something isn't added or tweaked on a regular basis, the instrument has ceased to be valid. The problems with this mindset are both numerous and very limiting to the mind that sets it, among the many issues:

- with constant "development", people don't really learn to plumb the depths of an instrument. Why really get deeply into it, when you can just wait for the next feature set and do one-finger masterpieces?

- that something which has reached a point of refinement is actually *not* as useful, as if an oboe was no longer capable of viable music since it hasn't been updated. Totally nuts.

I've got a plan: let developers work on instruments for the first 6 months of the year, and then no changes for the last 6. Let's see who learns to use their tools and make great and compelling music, and who sits around and says "but it doesn't have _this_ kind of filter and mod path, and ... ".

Lastly, the synergy between Tick and Daniel, Rhino and Maurer's new banks, makes this a very fertile and musical instrument. One of my finest and wisest investments!

Rhino has to be one of the best supported synths out there. Dead? No way. Long live the Rhino! :D

For me, Rhino is part of every of my new songs, and always at least at the beginning.
With Daniel's banks, it's a really must have !
i also own Kubik, Reaktor 4 and Wuzikstation, but Rhino is far more inspiring with it's wide range of sounds.
+1 for "Rhino is not dead" !

i think soem of this 'is it dead' thinking is due to the 'excitement' factor of softsynths and the ability of instant purchase/download from the internet.

i've noticed, now in over my 2nd year in this environment that the excitement is dying down and there's the usual harder work to overcome my own limitations in playing skills and composition.

when i first rhino i was blown away by all the textures that remained so transparent at the same time -- just exquisite rich sound. Now I've adapted and personally, I think, Daniel's 'emulation' banks -- while extending rhino in new directions, don't really play to its strengths for me. But for me that just means going back to some older banks and doing what it takes to improve my own skills.

Once the tools are in place, what is this need for new tools?

It always seems to me Rhino 2 does a more than admirable job and though I haven't used it with LIVE 4 or 5.01, I've used it in about 15 other hosts doing the review thang, and it seems fine.

As for feature sets, how long does a synth have to continue adding feaures? The thing I like about 'Tick and his synths is that they do what they're supposed to and then he moves on to another design.

That doesn't fix you problem with Live, but what version are you using and have you tried v5?

The way I see things, Rhino 2 is a bargain synth for the things it's capable of doing. I kind of hate when I have problems in other synths (to remain nameless) that have an impressive list of known problems that never got resolved.

I like and have tried to promote Rhino that I haven't reviewed it due to possible conflict of interest issues by other developers.

If 'Tick is working on a new synth, my response is, what is it and when will it be out?
