If so, on older chip sets and with certain graphic card combinations you might manifest playback issues. Try play back from an IDE, if the problem goes away then you need a work around. give me a shout and I will point you to a fix.
Hey man- I'll pm you as well, but this sounds like something useful-
I am running totally SATA, but could try PATA at some point once I get a bit of time on my hands - in the meantime I'm quite interested about this possibility- could you point me towards more info/a potential fix?
Thanks heaps,
Matt

Ok, I will post this here as other peeps may find this usefull. I think this may also help some of the GUI problems people have been having as almost all new video cards have stupidly high PCI latency settings.

On older chipsets for example NForce2, the SATA controller chip (in my case Sil3112) is actually wired onto the PCI bus and not the SouthBridge, which means its subject to PCI Latency issues. If your Audio card is also on the PCI bus, and your Graphics card is AGP it will also try to grab for resources which can lead to playback glitches even tho you don't have an IRQ conflict.

Some motherboards let you set PCI latency in the BIOS however, the problem arrises when the drivers for your cards set the individual PCI latencies when windows loads, the biggest offenders being graphics cards which load unneccesarily high values to achieve greater performance. Latency values range from 0 (as soon as another PCI device needs the bus it will be given up) to 255 (the device will hog the buss). My Radeon 9250 PCI latency was set at 248.

There are a few utilities which will let you adjust the Latency of your cards, PCI Latency Tool, PowerStrip, Dbldawg, and Im sure there are others.

I have PowerStrip as it lets you save the PCI adjustments and will reset them each reboot.

My PCI Latency's were set as follows:
Radeon 9250 - 248
Delta 66 - 32
Raid Controller - 16

Using PowerStrip I reset the Settings to:
Radeon 9250 - 64
Delta 66 - 32
Raid Controller - 32

Now I have glitch free play back from my SATA drive.

Thanks heaps man- this sounds incredibly useful-
will update you on how it works out once I get my computer unpacked & re-plugged. My sound unit's external so no pci stuff, but the latency thing sounds familiar- will check it out-

I think you'll find beno is indeed using T2. ;)

(hint: beno is Mr Mackie around these parts) :)
Someone shot the food. Remember: don't shoot food!

Ah-
I think hyperthreading actually increases performance for tracktion from the various threads I've read - so I don't think that's the problem.

Nope. Normally it isn't good for real time processing intensive apps like a DAW (there are exceptions to this rule of course). I would advise turning it off and see if your performance improves. You can always go back.

Whith a 2.8 I only get about 12?. Everything seems to count, the amount of clips, automation, plugs, hz.............ect, so far?

Tracktion-specifically most threads on this forum disagree with you- however I will test this myself.

Sounds like my system - but you may want to try the tweaks as listed by Mandolorian & others-

Um....how the heck do you turn the hyper-threading on or off? I'd like to tinker with that on my laptop to see if it helps any. Thanks!

You'll need to get into the bios of your machine and turn it on/off there- however hyperthreading is only implemented in xp if you had it turned on when you -installed- xp. Otherwise a different single-cpu-core driver is installed (more info on google if you query).
You can manually swap them (the cpu core drivers) over too- but it's more complicated.

OK that scares me a bit. :dog: I've never messed with the bios. I was hoping there was some sort of adjustment in the Control Panel somewhere. Hmmmm.......I'll probably leave well enough alone.

The bios is your friend! Don't be scared of it-
it's simple - hit f9 or delete or whatever to get into it on boot up, find the 'hyperthreading' option and turn it off (usually either + or PgDwn) then 'save and exit'. Simple stuff man - no need to worry about it-

Okie Dokie.......if you say so man. I'll try it tomorrow when I'm more awake. We'll see if it makes any difference. Thanks!

Cool
If winxp was installed when it was turned off, you will need to trawl google to find the instructions for changing cpu-core drivers - otherwise you may experience worse performance -
Cheers
