Here's a review of the Leeds gig from the Termite Club mailing list:

"i thought that after the shaky start, saturday night's noisefest had a really good convivial vibe to it (until prurient's set was curtailed - i thought it was just equipment malfunctioning, but brudenell plug-pulling is about as mean-spirited as it comes) ... crazy bill = 8 bands in 3 hrs, so it was inevitable that someone's set wd suffer. But, yeah, we''ll not see the likes of jessica rylan in leeds for a long long time ... totally out there on her own, alien + heartwarming. Someone shd give her her own TV show or something. But what's w/ the termite tighfistedness w/ the PA? you guys inadvertedly invented a new genre on saturday, w/ puterfier + bear-faced boy's sets = quiet noise - like sitting next to someone on the
train who was listening to noise on their walkman ... i mean, i kinda liked it, perversely enough, but i felt for the performers involved. C'mon - ditch the jive bunny PA (that's not a joke, BTW - those speakers really do belong to jive bunny!) + get a good meaty backline and/or PA setup! but, yeah, despite gripes, cheers for a fine evening"

Thats a pretty poor review all things considered. :(

The lack of bacline and PA has happened at a few gigs i have seen at the brudenell recently - its a really poor idea, and means that mixing is nigh-on impossible :?

Puriuent played for about 5-6 mins, but the volume was ear-shattering - probably literally :o I was really glad when he finished.

Funnily enough, I think that this guy is quite young - I have some "quiet noise" records - even Jessica Baliff does stuff like that, FFS!!!

Re: the "brudenell plug-pulling is about as mean-spirited as it comes". The guy obviously doesnt come from leeds or is a total idiot :x

There are some new accommodation buildinig works near by, and the brudenell has now been deemed to be a major noise polluter and is going to be banned from holding gigs unless all the neccessary upgrades to be building can be carried out. So far £3000 has been raised, but about another £3000 is needed as well. That is the reason for the curfew - gigs used to go on there until the performers got bored - half 11, midnight, 1, 2, etc (or until the police came along!!)

see http://www.brudenellsocialclub.co.uk/ for more details.

Its a real shame, as in the last 9 or so years (since i first came to leeds) the duchess of york closed down, one of the best venues in the country IMHO, the Town and Country club closed down (a great place to see big bands). Also the guy who runs the Royal Park Cellars venue has sold up to concentrate on the band that he manages. If the Brudenell closes down, all that will be left are really small rooms upstairs in pubs to see bands of a decent quality (well thats what I think!!). Or at the Vine pub which is a music venue, but has horrible acoustics and is smack bang in between two really (and i mean really) rough pubs.

The Leeds music scene is amazing, and little by little, there will be nowhere to play :(

That's really unfortunate... something that seems to plague many places right now, sadly.

Any good Leeds-based bands/artists to recommend? Apart from Mike Dando/Con-Dom, I'm not too familiar with who is active there.

For Doom Metal, Monster Killed by Laser are amazing as are Like a Kind of Matador

For Glitch, check out RandomNumber, he tours with Kid 606 quite often.

Er, will have to get back to you with other names later as now going shopping.

Oh the Vibracatherdral Orchestra, Birds Of Delay, and Lanterns for Improv/noise are three really amazing bands

Oh, and not from leeds but from Sheffield (45 mins down the motorway)

Chora - an amazing band who play improv power electronics (really fucking loudly as well :D ), but have the set structured, so they break out into US hardcore, ambient, post-rock etc, some beatboxing (well, kinda...) and the odd bit of clapping and chanting. Only a drum kit and stacks of effects - mindblowing

From Emil's tour writeup at iheartnoise:

"BEST P.A. SYSTEM - East Bourne - the smallest basement with the largest sound system you can imagine - its run by a dreadlocked rasta dude who wants to turn his tiny little space into a huge Dub Dancehall, only about 12 people fit in the place but the PA was designed for a 5,000 seat venue - easily my best set of the entire tour, I was in PA ESCTACY - it was also Doms best set, I've seen him play more than any person alive and this was the 1st time I ever saw him play with a smile on his face - sheer joy

WORST P.A. SYSTEM - Leeds - EVERYONE sounded like shit that nite, the P.A. was so bad I did my spoken word routine, there was no way I would ever consider playing thru something like that - the show was basically one big suck-a-thon, it turned out to be a giant contest who could suck the most - the winner, ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS - wierdly enough, this was the nite of Jessicas best set, she borrowed a small practice amp and proceded to charm the pants of everyone in the room - her Lullaby to Filthy Turd was as precious as you can get, it even brought a tear to Con-Dom's eye - I wonder how long it would be before she gets signed to Mute."

She'll be playing in Extrapool, next saturday. I take it I should go?

Printed Circuit (Claire Broadley) will be playing, too. From Leeds, apparently; Do you happen to know[1] her, Bunnyboy?
