Oh well - I just tried the demo with Reaktor 4 - it worked fine until I tried to freeze the track to save CPU. Unfortunately the CPU went up so much it tripped Reaktor's CPU overload protection, cutting the audio and making the render soundless. I found that I had to drop sample rate down by half before I could get a decent freeze (which meant a big drop in quality).

This doesn't happen if I just bounce down to audio in Logic - why the big CPU spike with freeze?

Post

That's ridiculous - why does a VST need its own cpu overload check?? maybe Logic is rendering it at real-time rather than as fast as it can go?

Obviously there'll be a CPU spike when you render something, because you want it to happen as fast as the CPU can possibly go..

Post

If you think about what reaktor does you'll see why it needs its' own CPU check ;)

You can set Reaktor up to cut off audio if it goes above say 80-90%. It happens with some ensembles. If you reduce the sample rate from 48khz to 36 or 32 it usually is enough on my Athlon 500 but when freezing the track I had to cut it to 24 for it to play ball.

this is probably a stupid question and is probably answered somewhere else:

my bar ruler is highlighting bars 11, 21, 31 etc.

is there a way to change this so it highlights 9,17, 25, 33 etc??

Total MIDI Newbie question -
I have been demoing tracktion, trying to decide whether I like and need it or not. One thing I was trying to do last night that I couldn't get was to play a VSTI thru tracktion. I am using WinXP with a TB Santa Cruz soundcard (until I can afford to upgrade). I selected a track and first try to create an audio track, but I could only get the default sounds from the sound card to play. Then I tried creating a midi clip, but I don't know how to get, for instance, the note data to play thru Synth1. I tried dragging the insert filter arrow all over the place and I can put it in my clip, but that doesn't cause any sound to come out. Can anyone explain, for someone that has never really used midi before) how to do this?
Many thanks
JB

JB,

Probably you haven't set the routing for the track(s). Click on the track name at the far left and look down to the track settings panel at the bottom of the screen. At the right of it you'll see a list of devices you can route that track to, and this should be set to your audio device.

If it's not there or there seems to be a problem, then you will probably need to go into the "settings" panel (tab at the top) and select the correct output device from the list.

Your track with the midi clip should have the appropriate VSTi inserted to the right, and an audio output selected in the aforementioned track settings panel.

(note: midi out will send out to an external device e.g. keyboard, sound module, not to a VSTi - unless you have some kind of virtual midi set up)

I hope this helps :)

Huh ?
Are you saying you can't move the Out marker beyond 3m45s ?
Never seen that happen.
How do you "move" the mark out ? With the mouse or by pressing "O" when the locator is at 3m45s ?

tried both, and not being able to get it above eighter in traction or the reason sequenser

I did try a search first ...

(Q1) Has there already been a request (and response) for a cubase-style drum map (as an optional replacement to the piano roll)??

This is the one feature that keeps me comin' back to Steinberg.

I looked in the manual first for this one (audio is covered, but)...

(Q2) Is it possible to import multi-track standard midi files into separate Tracktion tracks?

afair this has been requested a few times ... cant remember jules response but i guess some more drum-friendly features will appear in the revised piano-roll

dont know EXACTLY what cubase drum-maps are tbh but have you grabbed stepchild yet ???

yeah - just select track 1 (or whatever) and import your midi file - tracktion will split it and place each instrument on its own track

Thanks for the info! I'm mere inches away from becoming the proud owner of Tracktion. It looks way too cool to pass up.

I'm not sure what "tbh" means in this context... and what is StepChild? - my ignorance is seeming boundless.

oops - A quick look at the instrument links resolved the inital StepChild question.

Now I wonder: is there a programmable "snap to" grid in Tracktion/Stepchild? I really like to default to 32nd note triplets in cubase.

Post

tbh = to be honest

snapping - stepchild snaps to its single beat grid - tracktion set the snap size according to your current zoom level

ill be honest with you - tracktion snap method has been the subject of much past debate since (in terms of front-end at least) it does it differently to most other hosts but once you get your head round it it works well

doesnt (afair - dont use them myself tbh) snap to triplets but you could build a custom groove template to shift your notes in this way i guess

in the end - if you want an intuitive ... non-quite-conventional ... attractive ... fast-to-work-in host then splash out that $80 ... you wont regret it mate
