FL Studio supports it now.

Also, doesn't Vienna Ensemble support it? I haven't tried, but I'm pretty sure it at least comes AS a VST3 plug-in.

Vienna Ensemble Pro definitely has a VST3 version, it's the one I always use.

Vienna Instruments Pro installs a folder with the extension .vst3 that contains a pointer to 'content', on the machine where I have used the content.

This is incorrect. VST 2.4 supports arbitrary number of input and output channels. The host decides the designation of the channels, and the number of active channels. Beside that, the "VstSpeakerProperties" structure (in VST API) has 28 "future" bytes which could include bus indexing information in a future VST version.

I am liking the "abstraction layer" introduced with VST3. This is a proven way of handling future alterations (Microsoft DirectX has several examples on benefits from this). Also, this will help merge the handling of MIDI events and other internal "MIDI-like" events into one protocol.

This is evident with the new "Note Expression" feature in Cubase 6 (which is of course utilizing the VST3 "way" of communicating).

I believe VST2.4 (and below) cannot take advantage of this new feature, but I may be wrong?

^Looks good. The first step is x64 though, which seems to be the consensus here.

Considering how long x64 is around (on Windows now almost 10 years, and still it's not supported by some companies), it could take a while before VST3.x becomes standard.

I wouldn't say that. Global x64 development started even a bit later than Windows Vista release which was in 2006. Previously x64 was kind of "professional" server OS feature. So, x64 is only about 4-5 years old actually.

Judging from Voxengo web site downloads, 25% of Windows downloads now are x64 - which can be considered a serious part of the market. This was around 15% just a year ago.

As long as the plugin works, and as long as the hosts support VST 2.x then I see no reason in coding VST 3.0 plugins. So I don't care, turning away from the topic and quit worrying in this time about such a minor issue.

anyway DMGAudio just announced a new compressor called compassion, it comes as vst3 and therefore sidechain will work effortlessly in Nuendo and Cubase....I am pretty sure I will therefore buy it the minute it comes out and if it is as good a compressor as Equality is an EQ, it will be my new default compressor, taken the place of all the voxengo and psp stuff that are still and may forever remain vst 2.4
