I’ll circle back to this at some point. It was fun to mess around and tweak stuff. I don’t understand why developers still release synths where you can’t lock the fx mix knob.

It got outclassed when I snagged a new Digitone 2 for $50 off list price from Perfect Circuit. Bargains are hard to come by.

And if you actually want to do real FM without the training wheels and deliberately crippled FM programming of the Digitone II return it immediately and get a copy of OPS7 or HALion7/FM Lab

Doing so will immediately outclass anything sonically you can do with Digitone.

The Digitone 2 is a superior instrument for me. Seeing as there’s no “fake” FM - something is either doing frequency modulation or not - the Digitone 2 is also real FM.

I don’t like or want those others you mentioned. I even have OPS7 (deleted).

Are you comparing Halogen FM with an $1100 more expensive HW synth?

Halogen FM is fun to play with, too. It’s more than it helped re-spark my FM interest and helped push me over the line on getting the Digitone 2.

And the price difference was “only” $1,058!

Namely that it's a subtractive synth not an FM Synth

John Chowning (the inventor of FM Synthesis as we know it) states in the interview

"I noticed, in your instrument, that you put some boundaries on the possibilities", "this idea of letting the FM units be sound generators and then processed in normal ways that synths process sound sources seems perfectly reasonable. It eliminates the part where you have to know anything about the FM." "It leaves out many of the sub-sets but lets the user intuitively explore this re-formable, shapeable ball of stuff, then put that through the normal processes of synthesis that we know and love, band-pass filters and low-pass filters and so on."

That's cool and all, and I would buy a $50 plugin based on that, but let's not pretend subtractive Synthesis is FM because it's not

But if you love it and feel value in buying it awesome, but there is no need coming to this thread and crapping all over a cheap fun plugin because you got a hardware instrument

That reminds me of one of the early exceptional softsynths, the FXpansion Cypher. It was advertised as an FM synth but I don't think many people used it that way.

Think what you want, but, in the meantime, the rest of the world will continue to consider the Digitone and Digitone 2 as FM synths. You rebel, you! Whatever floats your boat. I'll just use my FM synths. I bet you think DCOs aren't actually analog. You seem like that kind of person. "Well, actually.....".
