IK Multimedia Xpansion Tank 2 Group Buy

I compose electronic music so I do not need 24 kinds of pianos and 13 violins, I need a set of sounds that cover the landscape as much as possible with good sound quality. ok there is omnisynth 2 but I do not like the quality.

so I chose these xpansions:

1-Symphony Strings 2
2-SampleOB Xpander 2
3-Cinematik Collection
4-Bass Collection 2
5-Piano Collection 2
6-World Instruments Collection
Bonus-Guitar Collection


now I have a doubt, can only Cinematik Collection xpansion cover my need?
if yes i can buy other xpansions (but not the Arp, i have Arturia synth)

there are many overlaps, particullary in Cinematik Collection vs the others instruments xpansion Symphony Strings 2 + piano collection 2 etc.. ?

It seems to me that Cinematik Collection is a pretty speciality library. It's mostly pads, effects, and the like. It's hardly a "meat and potatoes" collection of sounds. I can't see any way that Cinematik could be seen as a replacement for, say, Bass Collection 2.

The only Xpansion Tank that could sort of claim to "cover the landscape as much as possible" by iself is Omnisynth, and as you say, you can't expect the level of depth or quality from that as you could from any of the other choices you have listed.

On IK's website, you can look at the patch listings for each of the collections. You won't find much if any overlap between Cinematik and any of the other Tanks.

From your list, I notice there's no drums or percussion, other than what will be in World Instruments. It sounds like what you're trying to do with this Group Buy is cover a lot of "non-electronic music" bases so you have those all of those flavors handy. If that's the case, I think I'd recommend dropping SampleOB Xpander 2 from your list above and replacing it with Acoustic Drums 2. SampleOB sounds pretty nice - I was considering it myself - but if you're focusing on electronic music, you'll likely end up with a large number of other instruments that can do that Oberheim kind of sound. (Heck, just pick up a copy of Computer Music magazine and use ZebraCM.) Likewise, Electronic Drums might be right up your alley, but that being the case, it stands to reason that you'll end up eventually with more instruments that can do that sound better. In both cases, there's little reason to buy those Xpansion Tanks here and now; focus on the stuff that you don't expect to have from other sources.

You might also consider dropping Cinematik and adding in Hip Hop Instruments. That's a pretty well-rounded collection that has some flavors that might be more immediately useful to you.

I did not see rare vintage volume 1 ... I picked up rare instruments v1 electronic.. which is okand certainly does not fit it and only had like a 5 second preview and the description cutoff to boot.. So I may only go thru iks site for my next go round since there was not much else on the bonus list I could see wanting... I do have to say I dug the electric sitar and chapman stick..

I had a thought that it may be cool if we could have the option to sacrifice the 6x1 expansion (if it gets to 6x1, which looks likely) for one of the Squidz bonuses. Since I already have ten packs (+2 bonuses), the expansion tanks are looking less appealing. I wasn't crazy about the last two I downloaded, but I had to pick something. I don't use loops so they're out of the equation.

I wonder if others (especially those who entered multiple times) would find this a good alternative to picking another expansion tank 'just for the sake of it'

While that might be nice, it won't happen. The group buy is set up by IK Multimedia to be automated, which means that when 6x1 is reached everybody automatically gets an extra download in their IK user area. There is no way to change the setup without a lot of manual work on their part, which I don't think they are willing to take on, given the low cost of this GB and the large number of people involved.

I don't use loops so they're out of the equation.

I recommend that you and others stop thinking of these as "loops". Think of them rather as virtual instruments with drum beats (and percussion) sampled in context. Each "loop" is actually a unique drum kit, which contains beats which have a room sound and an overlay of different beats (which are resonating in the way they would when being played together in a real kit). This allows for results which you don't get with an ordinary VI drumkits where each beat is sampled in isolation. It can allow you to create more realism in creating a groove. There doesn't have to be any looping involved at all.

Especially for the percussion, these Loop *Slices* are awesome. But man, you can invent some fantastic kick, snare and hi-hat grooves by starting from some of these things.

Maybe it is not everyone's cup of tea, since it can involve more work in creating your drum track. But with a little dedication you can create things which sound very authentic.
