I don't have a Tele guitar yet, but think one would be good to have.
Any opinions on the current Fender models ?
A few pages back Eric recommended the "Vintage Hot Rod '52 Telecaster".
I'm very happy with my MIM Deluxe Nashville Power Tele, relatively cheap and you have to upgrade the PUs but it's a beautifully resonant piece of wood with a nice, substantial neck. A few friends fell in love and bought the same model, they all are on a comparable quality level and the Fishman Piezo is so convenient ... :tu:
Also check out the ESP Ron Wood (also needs a PU change), Tom Anderson and G&L ASAT, as well as any number of small custom builders or even a parts guitar, although I personally like to play an instrument before I buy it.
And with a guitar as popular as a Tele the local s/h market might have a nice one, too.

The deal is confirmed.

LP 2300 roughly, store price (after 10% off) 1150ish......and it's new.

I really don't need another guitar (as I've said before) but but but..........but........

Talking of PU changes, here are two nice easy mods you can do to a 3 PU Tele - very versatile guitars.

-- exchange the switch for a Megaswitch E to get the following PU combinations :
---- N
---- N & M
---- N & B
---- B & M
---- B
i.e. all three Tele sounds where you'd expect them to be, plus the two Strat inbetween settings (not 100%, but very close)

or:

-- put a SC sized HB in the middle position and simply exchange the hot wires of the B and M PUs at the switch
---- N
---- N & B
---- B
---- B & HB
---- HB
i.e. all three Tele sounds & two HB sounds, again arranged in a very intuitive, organic sequence
What works very well for example is a Fender Noiseless Tele set with a Duncan JB Jr in the middle

With the Deluxe Nashville Power Tele you might want to add an "on-off-on" mini switch to optionally ground (i.e. switch off) the electric or acoustic hot output wires, middle would be stock, both electric and acoustic on.
Voila - stage friendly fast switching ! :tu:

Now use the included stereo cable, electric to your amp, acoustic to PA (via DI if necessary) - ideal stage guitar if you need to be flexible.

For Top40 use I like the above with a twist :
-- the electric side goes to a JMP-1 and TC G-Major setup, either DI or better with poweramp and cab if stages allow
-- the acoustic side through any 19" multi FX with MIDI volume to PA
-- Bingo, single MIDI volume pedal for both, switching via the mini switch, separate programmable sounds for both - if that doesn't cover many bases ... 8)
Plus you only have a single stereo cable between guitar and 19" rack.

Just to show the potential, in a different scenario a simple amp with a few stomps might be what the doctor ordered.

you're welcome !
these are easy beginner level projects with nice results.
Thanks,

Maybe obvious, but the same mods work for all 3 PU guitars including Strats of course.

What's sad is I was actually trying to track down parts to make it MORE like the 72 Deluxe, including the pickups and bridge. Of course, I've since given that up and now have every intention of putting the Chandler back on.
What's your take on the three bolt fender necks?
I've got an early 3-bolt G&L bass that's killer so it must have been Fender's crappy workmanship.

My Tom Anderson and Melancon aren't my favorite instruments while most PRS's I've ever picked up have been quite good.

you're probably right because I just remembered* the time I sanded the guitar down and stained it...it was black and when I sanded it down there was a plugged hole where they mis-drilled for the jack. I always figured that's why it was painted black ;)

*FWIW that was probably the end of August or first of September 1981

I really like the ESP/LTD MG350FR I just got

My favorite mod for a strat or a 3 pickup tele is a blend pot for the bridge and neck pickups. Sometimes your bridge sound just needs a little extra warmth and sometimes your neck sound just needs a little extra bite; this is how you achieve both.

eric I would love these tips to be in DIY if you have the time to write it up how to do it for some who might not understand :)

In a nutshell that's what Brent Mason does. :tu:
Imho :
++ very flexible as it's seamless, nice for recording
-- on stage I prefer a simple 5way switch as it's fast and doesn't interfere with drinking so much :P
