well he DID sniff Reason v1 one day some years ago..
that almost makes him a expert, doesn't it?

Well, Bones is an established idiot around here, with his cliché "im-an angry-man" wannabe image et all, but you're all f**king idiots if you think the talent lies within your host or synths.
History is full of two kinds of people.

Very true. Related to that, when teaching composition I have found that it is essential to impose limitations on students in order to focus their creativity. Behind all of the "my sequencer's better than yours" nonsense, I think that the limitations of Reason actually encourage creativity in the same way, and as others have netioned it is very surprising the quality of music that some users are able to produce using Reason.

@Cryo: The dozens of people who have been claiming all through the thread that talent lies within their host or synths will sure be embarrassed to know they're wrong. :-D Serves 'em right, says me! *nod*

Oh, wait... nobody made that claim. D'oh! Am I ever stupid sometimes.

Reason has it's niche, obviously. No need to put it or the artists using it on blast. Purporting to place reason ahead of the whole of VST and all it brings to the work environment is just ignorant. The fact that Reason is more svelte in the resource consumption department is due to the fact that the environment is all-encompassing and proprietary. Further, 'all that gear' in the reason rack shares a large code component, and doesn't expand on it much. And this is where the rub lies right here. No third party = not reaping benefits of thousands of disparate teams all over the globe putting blood and sweat and years into reproducing some of the best hardware to have graced the studio. Standards-based third-party development is a model that will 'win' everytime simply due to the vast amount of work being done and the ROI by making all this work snap into a standards-based API. I won't lie, Maelstrom is neat, but if you A/B ANY output from the 'strom (the painfully ubiquitous WASP you say ?) next to Arturia's ARP2600 running at 96khZ/24bits, or the masterpiece known as the impOscar for example.... you'll cry. Even at 48/24 these types of vsti's are just mind-boggling in how good they sound. The list of high-quality vst(i) is infinite. FXpansion's GURU alone should be reason enough to start saving for a platform changeover for the lion's share of hiphoppers using Reason. The GAC-1 channel strip alone is reason (no pun) enough to start planning to move on from the entire platform.
I will admit that one aspect I find incredibly amusing is to watch a reason user be attacked by an affluent gear whore, and then they take it to the sonic arena. Guess what happens ? Often, the gear whore's track is artistically inferior in every way to the tireless reason upstart. Not always, perhaps not even often; but damn it's funny when it happens. Reason is great for learning, for the less affluent, and perhaps even with a great deal of toiling, an excellent set of samples and a copy of T-racks, may very well get you noticed w/ your demo. I would not recommend that any current reason users do any A/B auditions against the top 75% percentile of vst plugins of any ilk; it'll probably hurt your feelings.

Do what you gotta do. Run what ya brung. Keep it movin'.......

reason is a host.
if your dissing ANY of this software it's obvious that you've been around computer music for a very short time... because everything is a godsend compared to what used to be available...

Post

Reason is more than complete enough for any good musician to do just about anything. The typical computer studio today is so much more powerful than most of us will ever need that it's just silly to claim that Reason is somehow inadequate.

I don't use it (yet), but I can certainly understand its appeal. Simplicity, consistency, and efficiency all in a very well-rounded and complete package. The VST world gives you a lot more options but they come at a price,

IMO the current definition of a host cannot be without third-party capability. Reason is host-LIKE. Having been in this since peek, poke and apple cider spider, longevity is not an issue in forming that opinion.

You are correct that today's software is a godsend to aspiring artists that would otherwise not have such an opportunity. To that end, Reason is the host-like entry-level golden child. It is not however, thorough in the complete definition, and I have nothing but love for what it's doing to expose talent to a workable environment; hate has nothing to do with my opinion of 'host'.

There are other reasons but painstakingly defining and debating the term host will not result in a paycheck or a finished track, so i'll just leave it at third party exclusion and hostile proprietary design to make my argument.

Peace

Taking my mate to work today I passed a hotel where I could not enter and I could not book a room. It's called a residential hotel, similar to an apartment building but classier.

I don't think of Reason as a host, but by a loose definition it could be considered to be one. Which is just semantic hair-splitting IMO. It's a piece of music making software, and it happens to be my favorite single music program. :-)
