It's funny, the only projects I can seem to finish are from contests, or from some other means of creating a pre-defined context, or structure, or guideline for me to focus on.
As I've said before here, my first track was a bet from a mate because I used to play violin...

In fact, mates are great to write tracks for. Ask them the subject to go for and they're almost obliged to like it when you give it to them. Perfect audience.

Look forward to your track - and stick with it. Tons of fun 8)

How about Moulin Rogue (dyslexic mix) :hihi:

Best of luck,
Mouxbar

I'm waiting for a musician friend's input on the mix before I submit, as I'm very novice to final mixing, and I'm relegated to headphones.

This will be my first fully complete original track, so I'm really excited.
It's funny, the only projects I can seem to finish are from contests, or from some other means of creating a pre-defined context, or structure, or guideline for me to focus on. Otherwise, I start feeling lost, not sure what I want to do. And eventually I get frustrated, and say 'screw it.' A lot of good but incomplete material languishes in my projects folder. =o(

But not so this time! Woo! Finally, for all the time I spend trolling the sound design forum, I have something to prove that I actually do something with all that mania. Big milestone, for me.

Which warrants a 'thanks' directed at you, tattiemannie, for making me aware of the contest. I probably would've been piddling around without direction, as usual, otherwise.

One critical - perhaps catastrophic - problem yet remains, however. Something that may render my efforts naught: I cannot think of a good name for the track. And though I could just pick some cheesy funny 'rogue' derived name, I just cant bring myself to do it. I've become quite attached to this song.
Cool, and couldn't agree more on the usefulness of these competitions for completing things.

Very nice track, but better check with management about that sample at the end though before the deadline ends, would be a shame if such a good submission is disallowed because of that.

Great, hope you stick with it. Nothing aginst SE and SM per se, and you already make efficient stuff with that, but there is something about coded stuff and especially made for SSE that runs and sounds a bit better.

Not telling you what to do or read, but interesting article by Paulnasca, author of the terrific sounding open source ZynAddSubFX you might want to check out about sound harmonics: http://zynaddsubfx.sourceforge.net/doc_0.html

cheers for the submission shroom feverish ... :) ... best of luck in the comp!

Cheers for the encouragement and the C++ links guys, I'll def check them out!

I'll certainly stick with it, it's been something I've wanted to do for a long time. I gave myself a target of at least a little C++ by xmas, and I did. So I've taken it from there, and learnt more .... the frustration is all in having to learn loads of stuff before it starts to feel relevant to making music .. that was my second target, and I'm starting to 'get it'. So I've taken the knowledge I have already gathered, and now looking into game construction where I can see the code in action, and see how the music links in ... like in a way I couldn't see purely from studying and compiling fkn tax and interest rate calculators! :x

Major Bloodnok, being a Scotsman, I'm surprised you missed out on the title 'Kylie McRogue' ... :hihi:

Mouxbar, I can relate to your writing for friends method. I used to be involved in a lot of theatre .. mainly street theatre and childrens shows ... and was charged with the task of writing songs for these shows.
It was a lot easier than writing the personal and socio-political stuff in that I had some focussed background to work with ... the scene, the subject, the mood, the message, the characters, the event etc. Writing for kids shows was fairly pressure free ( apart from the deadline ) and yet, without the beating myself up to write better than the last one ( like happened with band stuff ), I wrote some pretty cool stuff! ... though I say so myself .... and some I could take further in a different environment. The biggest step in getting something finished is getting something started ... but only if you know the meaning of 'finished' ... that's the scarey bit! ... so deadlines are cool in that you get stuff 'finished enough' , learn from it if you dont want to develop it, then move on to the next start! :)

Thats such a common spelling mistake that it worries me! ... and yet puts stuff in perspective!

Being the Shane clone in a Pogues trib, I struggle to fit onto one hand the number of times we've been billed as 'The Brouges' .... and yet I struggle to fit onto two hands, the total number of gigs we've done! ... but then again, maybe thats because, playing the Shane clone, I never struggle to fit both hands around what Shane would prefer to fit his hands around of a night! :hihi:

... I take it from the tone of V'ger's comment that the aforementioned sample is either non-Rogue, or is a sample of a heavily transformed Rogue sound?

I am determined not to listen before posting the voting thread, so I am not equipped to disallow/disqualify ... but this has been noticed by a listener, and so is likely to be heard by other 'listeners'.

So, .... my first point .... no declaration of using a sample is mentioned in the track text file.

My second point ... if there is something in there so obviously a sample that a listener can hear it, then you have not been subtle and sneaky enough even to wear the 'boundary bouncer', 'lateral thinker', 'rules-ruffler' or even 'lovable cheat' badge .... and so I suggest you address this either by reassuring me otherwise, or resubmitting.
However, if on the other hand you have done something with Rogue that V'ger can't understand, then educate the poor sod! :hihi:

My third point is .... I have never disqualified/disallowed any track to date, and generally trust the voters to judge whether any 'boundary bending' gets in the way of what has been achieved with the featured synth.

And, my fourth and most helpful point is ..... the cheats who do best are the honest cheats who tell us they've cheated before we even have the chance to listen to their tracks :) .... and there's an advantage to being an honest cheat, particularly if you can be subtle about it ....
...by the time the voting comes around , no-one remembers who it was who told us they cheated!! :hihi:

.... Sorry if that sounds more like an 'OSC guide to effective cheating', but ... well, actually I'm not sorry at all! :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:

Post

Damnit! Tattie! Had I known its ok to cheat I would have used my Fabfilter Creative bundle and add some Helix to it! :hihi: :hihi:

tattiemannie, c++ will take your vst stuff to another level!

Obviously, i employ synthedit and synthmaker stuff all the time, but the c++ plug-ins seem to require less cpu; not to mention the added flexibility given/allowed.

Update... shroom feverish has resubmitted a sample free version.... cheers shroom feverish :)
