people want new never done before stuff now, and the beatles were mentioned earlier...
what exactly did they do that hadn't been done by others before?
other than taking things from disparate influences and bringing them together?
people talk about flanging in tapes, no, cage et al had done that.
sampling? no, musique concrete did that...
and so on.
also, the early stuff was pants and the later stuff, about 50/50 between great tracks and filler
there has never been a better time than now for music and music lovers, why? because right now you have all the music that's gone before available, are you telling me, you think you'll I've exhausted all the good? do you actually think you have ever even heard more than a small slice of what there is? piss off!
When electronic music sounded new, like the future... what went wrong!

i always found him a bit boring, but at the time oxygene was released i was still stuck in a small town, with very little access to anything new outside of the charts, being too young to be allowed to go to the city.BONES wrote: Sat Feb 27, 2021 12:30 amSorry, that never did much for me. Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols and Pink Flag both sounded far more like the future to my ears, just a year later. JMJ was just more of the same, like Tubular Bells or Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Centre of the Earth and King Arthur albums, all of which predate Oxygene by several years and none of which sounded like the future.
i really wanted to like it, because i loved the idea of synths!
they sounded like the future of music, at least that's what tomorrow's world would tell us...
even now, when the pubs were open, the couple that still have their jukeboxes (why do people want pubs with no music, but a big f**king telly showing sport or a friend's dvd???)still all have the same rock music that was on them when i got a bit older and was drinking as most young teens do!!
all the live music is bands that sound like led zep, although there's one friends band who are more beefheart, then a few low rent oasis type bands.
no electronic music at all!
ive got in touch with old friends since returning home, a few of them when ive mentioned i play with electronic instruments have asked "so the machine makes the music?" type nonsense
yeah, here's the machine, there's some cables, now press play fucknuts

that went on longer than expected!
but i still can't enjoy jarre. visually, live, it's good for a few mins, till you realise it's just big dancing robot insects, there's no story involved, so it's not much of a spectacular thing once you've seen them for a minute or two
sorry jean (yup, we know you lurk

To me, it doesn't matter if some music sounds new or old.SLiC wrote: Thu Feb 25, 2021 8:01 pm So as yet another emulation of a 35 year old synths drives the KVR forums crazy, I was reminiscing about when electronic music sounded new, like the future...
Now we seem to try so hard to look and sound like the past...
Is there nothing left to do with synthesis other than tiny incremental improvements in copying something that already been done? Analogue, FM, Samples, PM, WT, Granular.
Is that it, are we done?![]()
The only thing that matter is if its good.
If it grabs my attention because its well done, then its worth a listen.

If past music tried to sound like future and we sound the same today, than they nailed the sound of future and you are in it, enjoy or invent new future sound.

lol. they've been at it for like 30 years. have 100s of songs and numerous albums and eps and you listen to one song and thing you've heard them?dellboy wrote: Fri Feb 26, 2021 5:01 pmOk, the first one on your list "Autechre". I just listened to "Autechre - 1 1 is".Dirtgrain wrote: Fri Feb 26, 2021 4:04 pm
The Autechre, Clark, and Ochre tracks are objectively distinct from each other sonically (new tracks to me). I only liked the Ochre one, though, to put on my playlist (I do like other Autechre stuff). Didn't know about Ian Boddy and Trifonic--added to my playlist--cool stuff. New-to-me sounds in that Shpongle track (but not grooving with me--I like Star Shpongled Banner-Remastered, though).
Did I miss something ?
imo autechre is best experienced (for new listeners) by listening to their releases in order. like spend a month with each one.
regardless.. if your ears aren't used to listening to things that are a bit out of the mainstream or a bit experimental then a lot of music is just going to sound off or wrong to you. so.. go backwards and catch up on the past that you seem to have missed. there are lot's of things to discover if you've not crossed paths with autechre by 2021.
good luck or stop listening and stop paying attention and fold up in a cave somewhere and quit complaining.

Yeah, there was money in futuristic sound back than, now they just follow steep and generic trend with their money, I meen record labels that brainwash people on daily basis.Dasheesh wrote: Sat Feb 27, 2021 4:03 amIf you pay for it, they will make it. plain and simple.Passing Bye wrote: Sat Feb 27, 2021 2:35 am If past music tried to sound like future and we sound the same today, than they nailed the sound of future and you are in it, enjoy or invent new future sound.![]()

I saw him perform the album live at the Sydney Opera House. We sat two rows behind his missus, Laurie Anderson. She seemed to enjoy it as much as we did. i.e. Not all that much, really. Still, you wouldn't miss something like that, would you?vurt wrote: Sat Feb 27, 2021 1:20 am lou reed called it music, it has none of the qualities listed as the definition of music posted earlier.
That would be my fault because the machines definitely play 90% of what you hear from us on stage. So what? Machines are a lot less annoying than drummers.vurt wrote: Sat Feb 27, 2021 1:35 amive got in touch with old friends since returning home, a few of them when ive mentioned i play with electronic instruments have asked "so the machine makes the music?" type nonsense

What I've heard of Autechre makes me think I don't want to discover any more, thanks. It's boring, like Severed Heads without the vocals or any energy. Not at all unlike the sort of shit I used to do before I learned how to write songs, things long ago assigned to the dustbin. Or like a shit version of these guys, who predate them by several years -dayjob wrote: Sat Feb 27, 2021 4:26 amthere are lot's of things to discover if you've not crossed paths with autechre by 2021.
