Unfortunetely not. We did look into it. but you need a UPC (Universal Product Code / Barcode) which costs and you also need to be a registered business (which can cost a lot and would mean we would have to pay tax :-o,). The other option was that the cd would be released by an existing label, but that too would eat into profits. Also Shops take around 50% of the sale price of the CD, including online shops like amazon... this would mean that only around 5 pound of each CD sale would make it to the charity... as aposed to the 10 pound plus that will go if sold exclusively on the internet... and to be honest trying to co-ordinate distribution through shops looked like a lot of work... and we've all got day jobs elsewhere so would not have enough time dedicated to do this. So it's going to be internet sales only! Unless we get approached by a label who can sort it out for us, free of charge! :)

Nice detailed whys and wherefores answer.
Thanks.

Well, if its for charity I am sure that a shop (online or high street) would compromise their margin for this cause. Someone like Sister Ray would be a good starting point...they have a 'real' shop and online as far as I know.

With regards to a UPC or EAN code...companies are usually issued these en bloc and there is no reason why someone could not donate a barcode to you.

Sister Ray is a london shop. Although they might do it, We would have to find similar stores all around the world and try and co-ordinate deals with all of them and of course work out how the money is to be dealt with. I'm also not sure how Tax would work if we sold through shops either... and of course as the sale will be now occuring on every country as apposed to just in the UK (as the paypal account is registered here), I think we will be subject to many different taxation laws... But I'm not sure how that all works legally.

Basically sorting this out takes way too much time. And as we all have day jobs.. and pretty much most of my freetime has been dedicated to sorting this CD out at the moment... I can't see us successfully sorting out shop distribution.

yeah man,ben and others are putting an awful lot into this already,we have looked into as many ways of getting this out there as possible and as ben has pointed out most of them take money, even a small amount means then it isnt going where the artists who donated their tracks or the team behind the cd want it to,ie the tsunami victims.
it will however be available worldwide via the web.and yes i know some people dont have a paypal account but i bet most people know someone with one?
so hopefully this will help maximise our sales :D

obviously if you own a little independant shop feel free to buy multiple copies and shift em at face value then everyones happy :D

As far as I know, you don't even need a PayPal account. You can pay through the PayPal site with a credit card without ever opening an account. I know I've done it in the past.

I am still slightly concerned that paypal is/ will put some people of buying the CD. I have quickly looked at alternatives like worldpay, but they all seem to require a merchant account and a registered business?... Does anyone else have any ideas for paypal alternatives?

I would not worry about people being put off by PayPal – I had some write to me that they would never use PayPal – give them an alternative = nothing, Given the choice = PayPal. :) And the ones that will want to support this, they will pay a mate who has paypal, to pay for the CD on that account.

Exciting / stop the press news.

Just had an e-mail from the editor of the welsh Big Issue asking for a promo copy of the CD so that they can place a review in their next issue... :D

Do you guys think a promo copy should include all the cover art etc?... or just a cdr burn of the wav's would be okay? (err... like a white label I guess!)... not sure what is standard practice for this kind of thing?
