All the hyperdrive needs is a good kick, as any Starwars aficionado knows.

About to crash now, but I'll post the patch here later. It uses a free wavetable from Sabastian Weaver so it won't ever go in a soundset. Basically the SUB is FM modulating OSC B which is AM modulating OSC A. All the sound is coming from OSC A. Then it's processed with Serum effects. Essentially it's just a 16 bar riser, but since all the LFOs have retrigger set to OFF you can play different notes during that 16 bars without interrupting the rise. Here I used four bars of D, C, A, and G each (descending). There is a little compression post Serum using the dynamics knob in Cuttertone.Ameyah Audio wrote:impressive GH

I probably should have mentioned the reverb filter earlier as well since a patch like this couldn't be created without it. It can make ordinary tones suddenly sound like something "realistic". It's a lot of fun to explore and I've found it particularly useful for orchestral strings, orchestral percussion, impacts, and industrial sounds in general.
The patch has no macro or mod wheel assignments. It was just an experiment.

Hah Greg, that's a pretty remarkable saw preset. I don't understand at all how you got that out of that waveform. I'm actually a guitarist so I don't need something like that in reality, but it's very interesting synthesis-wise.

Getting from point A to point B here is basically about playing with phase which isn't something that gets discussed a lot, but is a powerful sound design tool. There are three things critical to this particular patch as far as timbre goes. One is the keytracked Comb filter set to 98-100% resonance. It cannot have any panning at all. The second is rapidly modulating the phase of the saw (70+ Hz). The third is the multiband compressor which enables the highs to ring somewhat like you'd expect from a Taylor. Those three things are required to get the somewhat authentic string sound.dwozzle wrote:Hah Greg, that's a pretty remarkable saw preset. Next in importance is the reverb filter which gives the impression of guitar body resonance and then the EQ for further honing in on the overall sound.
Of less importance to the tone (not required) I have the phaser depth set to 0 and use the frequency knob as a sort of tone control. I am also very very subtly adjusting the tone using the Remap editor on the saw. The Remap editor is easily my favorite warp mode. Though it doesn't play a big role in this patch, not only can you use it to dial in tone, but it can be used to control rhythm in the WT POS modulation. It's critical in my orchestral string patches for instance.
Next we come to the strum sequencing. In one LFO I have created two strums. Another LFO then controls the rate of the first LFO to create the strum pattern. I get something resembling a little bit of strum at the beginning of each measure by assigning note to attack, though it would have been nice if I could have assigned note to the LFO delay. A feature I think would be cool, though perhaps too specialized to ever be implemented, would be a polyphony offset in milliseconds; basically a way to make chords be strummed like on a guitar. At 50% (0.0) all notes would be played simultaneously. Turn to the left (negative values in milliseconds) to play lower notes before higher ones and turn to the right to play higher notes before lower ones. Modulating the knob you could have alternating up and down strokes.
Though this patch isn't using a noise sample, something that could help would be a way to assign retrigger points for the Noise sample within an LFO. In this way you could add a strum sample and line it up with the actual strums. Not quite as useful, but if you were going for a simpler strum pattern just having start and end point controls on the Noise OSC might allow you to line up a strum sample with the strums. In any case more LFOs would be required than the 4 currently available. I'm rambling at this point, but if you wished to be a purist and you had more LFOs to work with you might be able to create a decent strum sound by simply FM modulating OSC B with the Sub OSC, but would take some experimentation, and is moot point since we are out of LFOs.
Cheers!

I didn't really intend to make more of these, but I guess it's sort of addictive. These each use the PWM Electro table. They also use PHY 48HL6- or PHY 48HL6+ instead of the reverb filter. I would have used the reverb filter as well if I had another filter to play with. Something I discovered while making these is that assigning note to my comb filter's LP FRQ opened up a lot of tonal possibilities. Good fun...
Edit: I should mention these are experiments and the combs aren't tuned very precisely. Once we can type in values that should be possible.
