Providing the older version is kept updated that would be a good model. I'm not aware of that having happened yet with Dune but at least they are still selling it so if needed I would hope it would get updated. It is certainly better than developers telling you you can always use the old version but then doing nothing to actually keep it sustainable or fix bugs (eg XILS3).Urs wrote:Actually, I thought Dune was a good example, where a legacy product becomes a cheaper alternative. This ensures that the legacy product is kept alive, e.g. when the OS changes or standards update. I don't know how much effort they put into it, but we have a good system running to keep old products alive.Elektronisch wrote:And thats how that should be. Yeah, sure.
The idea is to support Z2 for many more years. It will receive global enhancements (tag based preset browser, plug-in formats and all that), but it might not necessarily receive new modules or such enhancements that are the reason to do Z3 in the first place. Zebra2 is pretty much without a chance for MPE support due to the way MIDI is processed internally.
The effort we put into Zebra 2.8 will hopefully reflect our commitment to it, despite our confidence to release Zebra 3 within this decade.

Within this decade as in before 2020 or as in before 2027?Urs wrote:The effort we put into Zebra 2.8 will hopefully reflect our commitment to it, despite our confidence to release Zebra 3 within this decade.

Looking forward to this! I play LinnStrument and bought Zebra 2 recently. MPE and zebra would be the perfect combination!Urs wrote:The idea is to support Z2 for many more years. How far the development progress till now?

Can't really say. If it's "number of modules that are actually ready", then it's zero progress. But if you count "number of technologies we want to improve for Zebra" then we're pretty far, as all we need to do is put them in modules. I guess it's somewhere inbetween the two.re23071998 wrote:How far the development progress till now?
As I said. Development today is much like a candy shop compared to 2005. Back then I had to figure a lot of stuff out, today I can choose from various solutions. But also, back then I could write code for 12 hours a day, today I'm glad if I can do 6. OTOH today we have better tools and a much better infrastructure for development and testing.
Example: For Zebra 3 we want to make unison oscillators more flexible. So instead of 1,2,4,11 voices we want something like 1-16. We also wanted to explore detune laws. So I spent a couple of weeks figuring all of this out. Later on the same happened for modern CPU efficient filters and for a new breed of envelopes that could be modulated in realtime. By then we already figured that we could wrap this in a product on its own, and that was Hive. Hive was also the first synth where we finally implemented arpeggiator and sequencer as separate entities which can act together. Hive is basically the result of four concepts/technologies that had to be developed for Zebra 3. However, what's left to do is a bit more than just copy and paste.

The unison really works in Hive. I have always been surprised how even with a high voice count just moving the unison by one voice or two will change the sound character. I would really like to hear that in Zebra3.

I know. But try it for example on 27 Display. For example to 130%. And all text like OSC1 or FMO or what ever you want will be pixelated. Looks strange and don't comfort for the work....maki wrote:you can already resize the GUI, doesn't that help?Alexander_D wrote:Can't wait 2.8 version (hope that finally the GUI will be adapted for a big displays) and of course Zebra 3!

Odd. It looks perfect on my 27" monitors (inexpensive Acers, 1920x1080) at 130% (or 140 or 150 or 100%).

No, it does looks a bit blurry at 130%. The original Zebra skin was created for 100% zoom level in mind, graphics are not doubled up to support HiDPI, so yes, they become blurry when blown up.
