I'm sorry too Chris, but I honestly belive that the more offence I cause by saying it, the more it needs to be said.

I would just like to officially object to the term "militant atheist" that has been attached to me: I deplore violence in all situations other than last-resort self-defence, so I don't think the word "militant" covers my position well, and "atheist" implies a mind less open than I try to keep mine..

When religion is used as an excuse for condemning and margenalising others it is - to use your word - an abomination. The God of the New Testement would have no store in that.

I'm afraid I see this abomination as an inevitable outcome of religous heirarchies, in the same way that corruption is now largely accepted as an unavoidable aspect of communism.

However, I do not accept that the positive effects of religion are only acheivable through religion. Quite the reverse, I think that people are more likely to follow rules that they can see good reasons for, and I firmly believe that a moral code based on compassion works better than one based on the fear of damnation.

I will again give the example I used in the ID thread:

"I do this because I want to go to heaven" is potentially a justification for suicide bombing.

"I do this because I feel sorry for him" .. can you imagine a scenario where this sentiment could cause anyone to commit an act of great evil?

For these reasons I belive that the future of humanity depends on us (eventually) rejecting these out-dated methods of social control..

As a general rule people here (including me) have respected and valued your musical/production opinions and input. They have not tried to force their religious view upon you. Please just have a go at showing them/us the same respect.

Not people here, no (though my sig was initially a response to someone else's overtly christian one) but I survived sustained attempts at brainwashing as a child, which is probably the source of my anger as an adult.

The realisation that the adult you just asked a question of has invented an answer off the top of her head (and presented it to you as having the full authority of God) is not a comfortable one at the age of 6 or thereabouts, especially when the same teacher is happier to shout at the 6 yr old for lying than to allow his explanation to get past his stammer.

My feelings toward that particular teacher did not improve at the later realisation that she probably didn't like me 'cos my dad wasn't jewish..

I suggest that, if they value my other contributions here, they just right off my intolerance of religion as the consequence of childhood trauma, and continue to feel smug that they are going to heaven and I'm going to burn in hell
