One simple way to fight Piracy / Warez - everybody helps !

I already broke relations to a cousin that thinks Piracy is "OK", he has a Playstation 2 with 30 Pirated games. And he is not young, he owns his own profitable car-shop, he could easily afford those games. :-\ I no longer talk to him, and if I see him again, I will ask if he still steals stuff. :-\

I think that its simply rediculous that we as musicians have nothing better to rant about than the whole warez debate AGAIN....FOR THE THOUSANTH FREAKIN' TIME.

If I was a developer, maybe I'd care but since I'm not, I dont. Can you afford to pay for plugins and such? You can? Great! Congratulations....but if you can't afford such luxuries because you spend most of your money in the REAL WORLD...well then let me introduce you to mr keygen, mr regcode, mr dongle emu, and most importantly, miss patch.

i am still an FL user. once on looptalk you guys did a survey and one of the questions was, whether we have used cracked copies of FL before purchasing a license, and for how long.

what were the results of the survey? it's okay if you don't want to disclose that information, though. just curious.

I don't know. But I'll tell you, FL is very popular so even here in the city I live in, a lot of people know it. I never met anyone who bought it. Of course we're in europe - piracy is a national sport.

Here's my view:

-a programmer sermonizing about piracy is a hypocritical lamer, as he surely started out with warez (especially if it was a long time ago)

-when you're on the programmer's side, yes you fight against piracy, it's normal, you make your best to slow down the cracking and to make cracked versions unsafe to use. It doesn't mean you have to sermonize about it, you just protect your investment that's all. I guess that even burglars need to protect their house against burglars

-let's say you have a friend who's a burglar - you wouldn't report him to the police, would you?

-what level of naiveness can one have to say something like 'hey this morning I got an idea. let's all report piracy!'

you don't improvise yourself a programmer, it's a lot of knowledge to grow and unless you start pretty rich (but then you don't even need to sell your coding), you had to check a lot of things, which you couldn't have all bought.

Now this may have changed with open source & free stuff, I don't know. When I started it barely existed.
All I'm saying is that I started at around 15, and that no way I would have been able to buy more than a computer (already more than a month of hollidays work). If I had to buy stuff at that time, I may have started, but 5 to 10 years later, after a couple of years of stupid jobs.
That would mean: you work while you learn programming to be able to live & buy your tools, you start at 20, and you finally get valuable skills at.. 30. Ok, I admit you can be a honnest programmer, but not under 30. OR your parents are rich.

Note that I don't know any programmer who never touched warez, do you really?

A guy (knowing my history as a 'collector') asked me a while ago for some plugins.
I banged a load of quality freebies on a disk, he didn't know they were freebies - he thought they were crack copies.
I still don't think he believes me

A mate of mine was having trouble with his
PC....I suggested that he might have spyware
or malware on his computer and suggested he
try Spybot S & D.......

A couple of days later I asked him if he
had installed Spybot and how it went...
he replied that he had indeed installed
it and yes, it had found over 20 spyware
"thingies" on his PC.....but he thought
the $29.00 price was a bit steep.

DOH!

I had forgotten to tell him it was a free
download...and he'd bought it from some
scumbag on the net........

It just never occured to him that a program like that could be free.....
