For me it would be:

The Chills Pink Frost is one of the greatest songs ever
Stina Nordenstam where did she go??
The Van Pelt Sultans of Sentiment is an awesome album and should've sold millions but, ah, well, they are my band now and nobody elses
Cap'n Jazz All this corporate "emo" has nothing on the original emocore kids
Suzanne Vega Yeah, shes influenced so many people but each of her albums is a testiment to creative songwriting and originality in a mundane genre
Mazzy Star Just becuase "Fade into You" is one of the greatest songs ever written
The Field Mice Cause they sounded like a cross between MBV and the pastels

The Pink Floyd were a fantastic band and could've become a true legend...

..had they split up when Syd disappeared to Neverland...

Crack The Sky!! Damn straight.

As an aside, I think relentlessly cheesy compositions and sudden death did more to mangle Jim Croce's career than CashWest ever did.

Although I could be wrong.

The Replacements

They are legends, but I wish they had had wider success.

I mean, Prince gets all this credit for putting us (Minneapolis) on the map, but Paul Westerberg has forgotten more great songs than Prince will ever write. And with half of the ego.

There is no justice.

Now, bring on the flames

Their big mistake? Signing with CashWest, who mangled Jim Croce's career.

OMG someone else in the world that's heard of Crack the Sky! I used to live in Columbia, MD. (just south of b-more) and a friend turned me on to them. Amazing players.. but oh man, they just kind of vanished all of a sudden.

I have several of their CDs and I'm proud to admit it!

Did anyone mention Dennis Waterman and David Hasselhoff? All they needed was a honky tonk piano and a disco beat and they were off the hook! Untold!

You are not alone. I was 19. It was 1995. There was LSD and So Tonight That I Might See. Blue Light. Fade Into You. Bill Hicks would have been proud.

Not so sure. From his biography:

"...Not only did he (Prince) release a series of groundbreaking albums, he toured frequently, produced albums and wrote songs for many other artists, and recorded hundreds of songs that still lie unreleased in his vaults..."

That said, "great" is a tricky word.

I'll be honest, I just never really understood his rep. But I'm not ripping on him. I just think that Paul Westerberg is a much more talented songwriter.
