I was just listening to Stone Roses the other day, and I remember when they first came out, the music critics practically wrote love letters when they reviewed the album. They were said to be one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and was on all the "Greatest rock bands of the era" type of lists in big magazines. Then, it all just sort of fizzled out.

Can you name other bands/recording artists that could've become true legends, but due to their own doing or other reasons, didn't end up attaining that status?

One that always springs to mind are the New Radicals. A great debut album (Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too) and then Gregg Alexander disbands the group to concentrate on other "production projects"

Last I heard, he produced Ronan Keating's "Life Is A Rollercoaster" :?

If you haven't heard the album, I suggest you get a copy. It is nothing short of awesome and it's a crying shame there was no more from him.

I guess the problem with the Stone Roses (one of my fav bands of that era) was that they refused to ride the wave and tour in America...

Although quite a few bands of that sort of scene all fizzled out... like My Bloddy valentine and such.

And of course the Pixies, although they seem to be enjoying some renewed interest these days... How shit would it be to get your band break up via fax???

I always thought it was highly ironic that the band with the final verse for their first single (who broke up before the song even got released as a CD-Single, no less) was about 'kicking asses' of other major stars didn't and they didn't last more than a month or so.

Kraft and Alexander. Did classics on ARP. Pretty good at it too.

John Squire, founding member of the Stone Roses went on to form a new band, The Seahorses. I was just listening to it again last week. Reminds me a bit of The Monkees.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

I was gonna say My BLoody Valentine as well, who suffered like the wonderful Stone Roses from a ridiculous length of time between albums. I always felt that after the 6 or so years wait for the Roses' Second Coming it was just a big disapointment. Although I doubt we'll ever see another MBV album. :(

I think the problem with the New Radicals were that they were neither new, nor radical. :uhuhuh:

I believe that the Smashing Pumpkins could have become legendary if they had not started catering to top 40 and
continued recording with Jimmy Chamberlin when they were peaking.

Type O Negative could have become legendary to a larger group if they had put out a CD annually while they were peaking (1994-2001).

Most of the downfalls of course were drug related.

I love that album. 8)

I have a mixed CD I leave in my car with "Mother we just can't get enough" as the first track. The Rolling Stones 'Sympathy for the Devil' influence is very strong - a truly beautiful thing.

Camel should be better known. They're still around but as far as I know they've never had the success they deserve.

It Bites. Fantastically talented. Tragically unsuccessful. Joyfully reforming soon.

And the number of the counting shall be three.

What are you on ???

A Grand Don't Come For Free is a stunning piece of work and one of the finest concept albums of our generation.

Mike's use of samples and minimalist tunes as a canvass to his intelligent, witty and clever poetry flies in the face of the commercial & talentless crap we are inundated with day after day.

The fact that both artists you mention are still going very strong should exclude them from this very conversation.

Whatever happened to the Beatles ?!?! Crikey, Status Quo have been around 3 times as long !!!

"Lean On Me (Ah-li-ay-oh)" was a belter !!

But if rumours of N.E.R.D's breakup are true then there is still hope for them :)
