fusion - Brand X
His work with BrandX is superb - especially on Unorthodox Behaviour and the live album.

In his later work the percussion takes a back seat to the writing, which is a shame, since while he obviously gets a lot off his chest, the songs just don't have many great qualities (no matter how many copies they sell). He even has admitted himself that playing rock beats for so many years (Many too many :P ) means that he finds playing the old stuff properly a bit hard.. That's probably why he did the Buddy Rich thing, just to get his skills back upto par again (having said that he could out drum me most days of the week!)

The quip I made was referring to his work post about 1984/5 (His first couple of solo albums had some notable tracks (The West Side and of course In the Air Tonite), rather than say 'Hate Zone' from Moroccan Roll!

'the West side' - I always was soooo in love with that track... :-D - but there's also other great stuff on 'hello I must be going' (e.g. 'do you know, do you care?') and to a lesser degreee on the following two albums as well - tbh I'm still particularly fond of 'don't lose my number' :-D
- shame about his drumming skills though - Bruce Hornsby called him 'the human metronome'- I don't know
how it could happen that a great musician like him fell so deep... :? :-(

It's not as stupid as it sounds, maybe he is a synaesthete – he might literally see different pitches or timbres as different colours. Many well-known musicians (and other artists) are thought to have had, or are known to have had synaesthesia.

It's a fascinating subject, see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synaesthesia

The famous quote I still love for it's naiv-e-tee was the two girls in Towers Records or similar in 1976 or so... And the one girl excitedly shouts to her friend down the aisle "OH MY GOD! Paul McCartney was in a band BEFORE Wings!"

That, and the 'brown note'.
