Hi Alex

Thank you very much! I tried to get all the elements of a 70's piece. You got good 'ol rhodes( Mr Ray), mellatron, minimoog and guitar antics. While there is a touch of a jazz feel, it kicks into some prog stuff in the middle. I think Prog was a mixture of everything( or else it would not be Prog)

I guess I could have placed the instruments more in a stereo field, but it seems to be OK. I was considering adding a real bass, but thought it might get too busy then.( its already pretty busy!)

Thanks for your comments, and glad to be finally submitting something. Its my 50th this 25th, so need to celebrate and do something a bit new :-)

Tim
Everyone in this life who makes it to the 'half-centry' mark deserves a big congrats mate -- so -- Happy Birthday & Big Congratulations! :tu:

But I'm sorry Tim -- I'm afraid you'll have to bow out of the contest and disqualify yourself.

We simply can't have you running around in here going "That's my patch! That's my patch!" :|

:hihi:

Would have enjoyed hearing that busy bass anyway mate ;)

Cheers,
Alex

Thanks Alex..It would actually be great if I could run around saying "That's my patch!" but i've done so many, it would be hard to tell :-) I kinda wish I could add the bass, but according to the rules, you can't resubmit a piece ( right?)

also, since this is my first time..how do you actually vote? Does a thread come up later for the voting?

I never did quite get over the polka thing...
It looks like April's theme is already in the works, but I think we can make a strong case that electropolka should be the May theme.

I know that January is National Polka Month, but I don't think we can afford to wait until 2008 for this: KVR needs an electropolka theme for the monthly music contest, and needs it soon.

Scoops will start a voting thread on or about the 25th of the month, in which we post our favourite 10 songs in order from 1st to 10th.

And, no re-submissions.

Welcome to the contest TC, and more importantly welcome to the over L crowd

@sttjelle and fuz-travel
Sounds like Vangelis meets Pink Floyd and PFM. Excellent changes throughout and really like the guitar work. Nice keyboards as well.

I take quite a wide view of prog, including the obvious (Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, PFM, etc),
Anyone know where I can find some PFM to listen to?

I just came up for air this afternoon after a few months solid of having way too many projects happening at work, and I noticed that the theme this month is prog. I grew up hearing my younger brother's prog collection playing constantly on the family stereo. And his favorite band was PFM. Hence the question. I suddenly got nostalgic.

Thats excellent news! My favorite artist of all time are Vangelis and Pink Floyd
Btw, I really like your tight groove and rhodes piano + what you're doing with your lead guitar. Some phrases out there are way beyond my guitar skills *envy* :)

God Bless!

Xnah - Lost Souls Dreams -> Nice guitar work. Mellow sounds, love the Kongaudio ChineeWinds. I like the pace and the melancholy tone.

More reviews!

Let Us Alone - Streifentier:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doesn't really sound prog, especially in the vocal parts. On the other hand, it does sound very complex and orchestral and in that sense it does have a prog sensibility to it. Nice track, great atmosphere and some wonderful orchstral sounds. Nice arrangement too. Great!

Come to my dark side - Gucky:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A nice mix of rock and disco this one. Great atmosphere and I love the lead synth sounds. The vocals have a Kraftwerkian quality to them and sound very cool. Nice soloing. Pity about the fade-out at the end. A very well produced track Cool!

Shift Shock - Mmichalski59:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Very nice. Has a bit of an Oldfield quality to the first part which I really love. It is mixed a bit soft, though. Cool arrangement and great sounds (I'm a sucker for string ensembles with phasers). Great stuff!

Fuz-travel - Sttjelle:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wonderful track. Everything in it sounds top notch but I really love those guitars in it. Great harmonies and very nice drumming. Another track I'd love to have go on for 20 minutes... pity about the ending, which feels a bit open. Top notch!

Too young - Dunks:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Great sounding track (except that I really don't like those vinyl effects). Doesn't sound prog to me, but the instrument sounds do sound spot on. Great mix. The vocals give it a bit of a Dark Side Of The Moon aspect. Cool!

Lost Souls Dreams - Xnah:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instrumentally very nice, don't really like the vocals though. Nice guitars. The ending is a bit sudden. Nice.

Quintessant - TC:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nice instrumental track! I love the guitar soloing. Great sounds and a nice arrangement. I'd have loved to have this go on. Pity about the fade-out. Great stuff!

Thanks for the reveiw Marc JX8P, your right about the vinyl sound I sampled one of my mums old top of the pops records :hihi: tried to clean up the samples as much as I could, they were a lot worse.

mmichalski59 - Shift Shock -> Lovely synth melody in the second part. I like the way this builds, from the lonely guitar in an airy landscape to the busy, driving sound at the end.

Dunks - Too young -> Nice groove, interesting sound, a bit sparse though.

streifentier - Let us alone -> Nicely shifting soundscape, lots of good movement and energy without being sudden or overwhelming.

nikp2000 - The Red King -> Some great rough, raw sounds. Nice buildup, was feeling the need for a big explosion of sound at 1:33 or so but it didn't come (wouldn't have been enough time to do it justice with the time limit, I guess).

Hi Marc JX8P,
many thanks for review of my song
"Come to my dark side". :-)
The fade out was necessarily because of the 2 minutes limit. The original track is 5 minutes.

So this is a cut & paste from another track you did? Or...?

First batch of reviews from me:

Marc JX8P: Timechange - Super tune that definitely captures the progressive sound. Reminded me of early Gensis material. Mix is excellent, sounds are all appropriate, in fact it sounds like almost all 70s synths are represented. Ostinato kind of covers the melody near the end, but if I have to get to that point to find something to improve, I'm diggin' deep. Great tune!

Legion Hush: Disco Arbys - I am very worried for Legion as this tune completely captures the spirit of disco. :) Oooo, baby, let's do it with a Cheddar Melt. Great wah guitar sound, and the string sound is absolutely cliche, which is a good thing for this tune. Ends a little abruptly, but then again, so did the disco era. Loved it!

Kara: Tribute to Zelda - Really nice melodic material here. While my first impression was that it didn't sound progressive, I could here Kansas playing something like this and they were definitely part of the whole progressive scene. My ears say there is some lacking chord support structure in the middle under the lovely melody and counter. it is added later with strings, maybe arpeggiate some harp or light piano. In any event, the tune has direction and a nice contour and I really enjoyed it!

Shane Sanders: Alaskan Highway - Funky progressive, I can dig this! I would have liked a little more melodic material as there is room for it, but the groove itself is infectious. Nice mix and sounds selected all mesh well. I especially liked how the little guitar lick at the 1:30 mark rides on top of everything else. Well constructed and catchy!

Echo Voodoo: Why Are You Calling Me? - Love the way this builds at the outset. Excellent use of the vocoder. Gives it an ELO, Mr. Blue Sky sound even though it is much funkier than that. Mix is excellent, nothing gets lost. Wish this would have built a little more but two minutes is two minutes. Would love to see where this could have gone. Nice work!

Khepira: Sunset Flight - Another fantastic groove. Funky bass and really nice drum work. Sax sound didn't really work for me. Missing some sax characteristics like vibrato. Mix is nice and I really liked the use of reverb throughout. Always seemed to be just the right amount. Would have like to have some melodic material to tie it all together, but all in all, a well constructed and mixed offering. Excellent!
