I made an ass of myself on this thread, the sweeping statements and ivory tower attitudes. Sure I pissed off IIRs big time by even making remarks about him, hence the personal attack by him, but the way he was taking revenge (with pHz defending) *against KVR or even copyright rules* has me a bit worried. I have no problems with people playing modifying my stuff, or even posting it, unless the purpose of it is just to piss me off.
pHz, you doing remixes of mully (your good friend) is an entirely different thing, and you know it! Musical collaboration is definitely the biggest strength of this community. It is a presumed right, even by the rules of this community, but doesn't that also imply that the collaborators need to be in an agreement about it?
Who are we to turn to unless you or the rest of the mods don't abide the community law? I don't give a damn if you thought my attitude was disappointing. As a mod you have certain duties you can't really take personally.

As far as the overcompression of my music. It's getting out of hand I know. I'm in search of the perfect compression sound and the methods I've used this far have only worked so and so. Like was pointed out by some, my previous poseted KVR work sounded like some cheap guitar pedal compression. Can't say I've since gotten any better with the discovery of the joys of sidechaining.
I just love that pumping as an effect.

Nah, not really.. I just thought you needed a little more humility (yeah I know, me too probably!Kingston wrote: Sure I pissed off IIRs big time.
Actually I rather like your music, and I think the basic mixes are good.. its just the 'mastering' stage you got a bit wrong IMO, as the bass is a little overblown and the dynamics are squashed too much. Do you use small nearfield monitors by any chance?

Do you have Inspector? It displays peak and RMS levels on the same scale, which is really handy for judging how much compression to use on a mix: assuming you have a brickwall limiter bringing the peaks up to (just below) 0dB, the RMS levels should never really go much above -12dB. (Those two mixes of yours were creeping close to the -6dB mark!Kingston wrote:As far as the overcompression of my music. It's getting out of hand I know. The monitors are Dynaudio BM6A and the problem is always the room. They have been too big for the rooms I've been working on this far, unfortunately. The bass end has odd dips and boosts because of it. With the mixes these boosts are inverted tho I try my best to compensate. There wasn't a good spectrum analyser like voxengo span available at the time I made these.
I've used the wavelab RMS/peak monitor gadget which is near identical to Inspector. The RMS rides in around -10db area, which is a similar level to other (commercially mastered) music in the same style as this. Could be that I did something wrong at the time and the RMS level were wack, but A/B comparing to commercial mixes everything seemed fine(ish).

Many commercial mixes these days are far from 'fine'
I came across a rock track the other day that started with a telephone ringing type sound effect, then the guitars started playing the riff, then the drums kicked in.. looking at the waveform in SoundForge, not only was it impossible to see any difference between the guitars on their own and the full band, I couldnt even see any difference on the intro sound effect!
I think the music industry is going to have to standardise levels in the same way that the film industry has, as more and more people are using the same equipment to listen to music and to watch films.. if someone set their system volume to watch a film at a decent level, then put your CD on without adjusting it, they would get a very nasty shock! (might even damage their equipment!)
I bought myself Inspector XL recently, as I intend to use K-System metering from now on..

I've had my eye on Inspector (and k-system) as well. Should've jumped on it when they were practically giving it away.

\o/ K-system all the way - if only people outside forums and Katz' site would realize the benefits
After a few recent discussions with people who are computer and internet savvy besides being fulltime producers, it was really disappointing to find out they've never even heard of K-system...
But that's my task, being the smartass who visits studio folks and recommends software, plugins and other niceties =) (been doing this for 10+ years already, with graphics software and later on music stuff - if only I could charge for it I'd be swimming in cash)
Regards,
JMH

Okee dokey--
Since I don't have oodles of bandwidth and Spe3D is hella generous with his Auditorium site, I've given the participants links to 16-bit 44.1k .wav files, but hosted an OGG file at the Auditorium.
As mentioned in my novella-lengthed post, the OGG is exactly the same basic mix (sans mastering compression, EQ, and spatial manipulation) as what the participants have received, so you'll be able to hear a 'before and after'.
I also provided a long-ass history of the song and some technical notes.
Auditorium thread: http://audioshots.com/auditorium/viewto ... 9864#19864
Since THIS thread's not really about the quick little 'master-off' idea, any comments about the song etc. should be confined to the Auditorium or a separate thread here. Just be gentle-- I'm not deaf and I know the song is god-awful (but sometimes in a good way!) in parts.
While you're at the Auditorium, have a peek around. Some great artists there!
