As much as I enjoy psy it's easily one of the most formulaic genres heavily steeped in dogma. That's why I have a predisposition for the Suomisaundi stuff. Those guys clearly don't give a shit.

Trying to get close to the modern proggy basslines (Egorythmia, E-Clip, Daniel Lesden etc)
What do you think of this one?

Also there are some synths for context but the main focus is on the kbbb.

Thanks!
What's wrong with the kick? (too sharp/clicky maybe?)

no, It's just a personal thing.... I don't really care for 'analog' (synthesized) type kicks... you know, where you can hear the pitch envelope... but I understand they are used quite often in psy! Other than that though, I really like it. Nice job!recursive one wrote:Thanks!

I see. Indeed, kicks of this kind are quite common in psy now.
Thanks, glad that you like it. I think I'll make a full-length track out of it.

Here is a goa piece on working on at the moment. I posted it earlier in the rapid thread but I made a few changes. I'll probably redo the track from scratch in studio one and completely redo the drums and stretch it out to just under 8 minutes

E-Clip uses Trillian for his basslines with pretty much the default settings - and a bit of EQ and some very subtle multiband expansion on the highs. Or he certainly used to! I think Daniel Lesden uses Sylenth.recursive one wrote:Trying to get close to the modern proggy basslines (Egorythmia, E-Clip, Daniel Lesden etc)

Modern prog basslines tend to be pretty fat so just get the biggest sound you can out of the synth and you'll be 90% there

I know that the Serbian guys love Trillian but I don't have it. I believe getting good bass is more about the right setting on a bass synth and right equalisation rather than using a specific plugin (ofc, some synths may do this better than the others). I use Sylenth and Spire for bass.andymcbain wrote:E-Clip uses Trillian for his basslines with pretty much the default settings - and a bit of EQ and some very subtle multiband expansion on the highs. Could you say something about the bassline in that my example?

If we're talking about the contemporary psy bass sound - some synths definitely do it better than others - I've tried quite a fewrecursive one wrote:I know that the Serbian guys love Trillian but I don't have it. Your bass is sounding fine to me here - though I think the whole thing would benefit from a more solid, modern sounding kick if you want to achieve that Serbian Prog sound. Your kick isn't bad but it reminds me more of Goa or older full-on. You might want to consider changing the "rolling" rhythm to more of a straight "gallop" too - possibly by lowering the volume of the first bass note. Up to you, though

(One thing I've noticed is the track really seems to "glue together" when you have the right kick
)
