Tone2 Firebird going Freeware

It's the usual with Tone2. No one can prove their program does something fishy as it means a monitoring app, sandbox or similar has been used to check in which case Tone2 labels you as a criminal for hacking (reverse engineering). Posting the proof then becomes a criminal act and will get you banned from KVR or even prosecuted, just posting the claim or even innocently using a install monitor/sandbox as part your computer routine means you have admitted to breaking the EULA in which case the plugin can no longer be used.
And as usual this thread will probably be locked and then at Tone2's request deleted so nothing that was said or admitted by Tone2 can be proven again so it's quite a slick system, but everyone can still see a few pages ago Tone2 admitting to at least scanning your entire computer (network too?) and deleting files at will so no denying just now, only until the thread is removed at which point people will in another discussion again say Tone2 never does that and the round starts again.

Although that is pretty illusionary. I mean a software install files into the folder you have chosen, but it also writes stuff in the registry, installs files into your user folder, maybe installs dll's in your Windows folder. So you don't really have control about what it does and what not.Aloysius wrote: My Laptop belongs to me. It is private property. If I invite you into my Laptop by using your software, I expect you and your software to show some respect. You are a GUEST and you are NOT permitted to start re-decorating the insides of my Laptop as YOU see fit. Fuc off with that attitude.![]()
Nonetheless, there are certain limits of what a software should do and what not, and those limits seem to be highly subjective, as this discussion shows.

I have a bunch of Tone2 stuff (like 90% of their output) over a number of years, and have to admit I've never, ever, had anything untoward happen with their stuff trying to phone home, crashes, locks or whatever.

They said this Saurus isn't legit. I should buy the original Tone2 Saurus. But all I wanted was a toy Saurus...

This is what Bastiaan posted:V'ger wrote: but everyone can still see a few pages ago Tone2 admitting to at least scanning your entire computer (network too?) and deleting files at will so no denying just now,
Where does this mention scanning your whole computer?Bastiaan from Tone2.com wrote:Guys,
Only blacklisted Tone2 keys are removed, no additional scanning (certainly not deleting other software/banks/....)
I'm sure for some there's no valid answer I could ever give to explain why we copy protect our products, but please try to keep in mind that even though there are quite some nasty rumors coming from release groups, it wouldn't make sense for us to do the things we are being accused of.
If you have a valid keyfile the product works, if you have a blacklisted keyfile it doesn't.
Fwiw, most of our keyfile protected products have never been cracked (all releases out there are purchased with stolen CC and naturally these are blacklisted), so some release groups have every reason to take the negative PR route when it comes to Tone2.
Where did they mention anything is deleted besides illegal Tone2 key files?

They didnt say that, and thats not what happens.V'ger wrote:...everyone can still see a few pages ago Tone2 admitting to at least scanning your entire computer (network too?) and deleting files at will
Im not sure what exactly the deal with the installers is, (nor do i really care as that stuff is Tone2s responsibility), but as far as FireBird is concerned it only looks for Tone2 keyfiles in its own directory and that is completely it.
If you want to check that for yourself, go get yourself a copy of Sysinternals and monitor FireBirds File System Activity with Process Monitor. (Thats Procmon.exe) There you will see exactly what the DLL is doing. (And what it is NOT doing.)

I honestly couldn't give a flying f**k, I have never used any of Tone2's software as I am not really that interested in synthesizers and their effects have zero appeal to me personally being the main two reasons as to why.BBFG# wrote:Seems more like you don't want to use any of their software, legal or not.Dean Aka Nekro wrote:BBFG# wrote:Seems like the only people that would be enraged by such actions are the ones that use or want to use illegal Tone2 software. And since all they are doing is telling us who they are in their attacks on what is now a well known policy by these threads (above and beyond the print in EULA). Why argue with them? Instead we should thank them for identifying themselves as the very people Tone2 wishes to protect themself from. The deception revealed, is only theirs, not Tone2.Absolute bullshit. Yeah I really want to use illegal Tone2 software
and now I am f**king mad

So don't. And get over your mad that others have no problem with their up-front policy.
If you failed to get that in my post it is your problem or perhaps irony is a dead scene
I find it genuinely hilarious how serious so many people take themselves and everything in their little bubbles of interest
I might well be mad but really not the sort of mad you are thinking (I think you are thinking anyway as you used the term 'enraged')
Mind dat installer stinks very fishy, So even if I were into synthesizers I'd still pass (I think)
Peace from a mad man BBFG#

How do you know where it scans and where it doesn't?ENV1 wrote:as far as FireBird is concerned it only looks for Tone2 keyfiles in its own directory and that is completely it.

The answer to that question is in the bottom part of my previous post.V'ger wrote:How do you know where it scans and where it doesn't?ENV1 wrote:as far as FireBird is concerned it only looks for Tone2 keyfiles in its own directory and that is completely it.
(Really, check it yourself, nothing beats seeing things with your own two eyes.)

Well grats, you've just admitted to monitoring the install which according to Tone2 is in breach of the EULA and a criminal act, they've said so here on KVR. It seems you really didn't read my post at all..

If this is true then i guess we all know that this is BS.V'ger wrote:Well grats, you've just admitted to monitoring the install which according to Tone2 is in breach of the EULA and a criminal act, they've said so here on KVR.
Nobody can take away your right to monitor whatever the hell you want on your computer.
(I mean whats next, outlawing the taskmanager? Please...)
PS: Forgot to add: If you do check with procmon, be sure to run FB in a copy of SAVIHost and add the exe to procmons Process Name filter. That way the rest wont interfere and you will see only what FB does. The scanning is done when FB is shut down, so you have to close it to see what it scans. (Which as i said is only its own directory.)

This isn't the first issue I've had with Tone 2 software...I won't dredge up the old issues again. I'll forgive you for not knowing the back story....and for the record I used to beta test for Marcus long before there was a Tone 2. Now I simply don't trust him or his software any more. Sorry if that upsets you so much......Halma wrote: Heck, someone writes something without a proof and because of that you are done? Do you guys act like this in the real world too?
EDIT: Also for the record I have never used cracked, warez, or pirated software of any kind and I never will.....I don't even have a single illegal mp3 on any of my 4 computers........

They say it's reverse engineering and therefore hacking. Breach of EULA and a criminal punishable offense. Even using a sandbox is. You are in fact no longer allowed to use the program.ENV1 wrote:If this is true then i guess we all know that this is BS.V'ger wrote:Well grats, you've just admitted to monitoring the install which according to Tone2 is in breach of the EULA and a criminal act, they've said so here on KVR.
