I am a huge Love Spit Love fan...but that goes back to my Psychedelic Furs days anyway. But I really thought that version of that song appeared in The Craft (witch was a much better movie than the Charmed show...see what I did there?)wagtunes wrote:Theme From Charmed. How do I get Van Halen "Jump" sound?

In case it hasn't been mentioned already, people often put their synths through amps in the olden days.

Alright, makes sense. Could have sworn someone told me 20 years ago, when they were hip, that they were Scotsmen. But what do we germans know.brainzistor wrote:Irish. You can even see Irish flag on the picture of video you posted. Irish Americans.chk071 wrote:
Oh well, as i just found out on Google they're actually american... could have sworn they were Scotsmen. Strange.
Everlast was in that band.
Their "Same as it ever was" album is one of my favorite hip-hop albums, but I'm not that much into hip-hop.
When you hear the album, they are referring several times to their Irish roots, Irish laws and stuff like that...

That sound is a "supersaw" of the 80s... Why would you want to recreate it??? It's like saying "spam was so nice, I want it instead of all this healthy food" nowadays.
Having said that, an OB-Xa emulating VSTi should get you there, Maybe try OB-Xd? Although it is trying to emulate OB-8. The thing is also - the FX. Reverb and chorus most probably. Maybe a touch of delay, too. So make a patch in OB-Xd [all saws] and put it through a chorus+delay thingie and some hall reverb. That should take you there.
The better "jump" sound would be jumping on a suitcase and sampling that, like Depeche Mode did for "Stripped".

Something similar to OB-8 should be fine too, especially if wanting their live sound, because that's what Ed used live.
I think somebody mentioned somewhere here and it's also stated in Wikipedia that Jump was recorded with OB-X and played live with OB-Xa. While Eddie himself has certainly not always been too clear about his gear choices, he has stated on many occasions *) that in the recording they used OB-Xa and later on live OB-8 because OB-Xa was discontinued and they found OB-8 more reliable.
More history, Eddie said that Jump was actually written on Sequential Circuits Prophet-10 but it kept blowing fuses, so he got OB-Xa after some friend had recommended it. There is at least one phone interview where Ed plays live the early raw version presumably with Prophet-10. Enough cork sniffing?
*) For example the Steven Rosen interview from 1983 (Guitar World) and
Keyboard Magazine, April 1984.

And as i said earlier, poly glide and EQ are the 2 most important keys to this sound.

Since this immortal topic was resurrected once again, I thought I'd share my Jump "impersonation" from a few years back, using OB-Xd plus some basic effect plugins. As has probably been discussed many times before, getting the raw synth sound right only gets you so far. For the proper Jump vibe, the EQ, stereo widening, reverb etc. also have to be there. I think I got pretty close, the hardest things to get right seem to be:
- The phase between the two oscillators is constantly on the move, so it's pretty random what each playthrough sounds like
- There's something in the very attack of the chord stabs that is hard to get right (might also be how they are played, instead of a sound/mix issue)
- There's a delay between the left and right channels, and while the actual delay length is not that hard to find, there might also be some processing or modulation in the delayed signal? (I thought the whole synth part might also be doubled, but not sure)
- The reverb... it's a surprisingly big part of the sound.
- The single most important thing is EQ! The original sound has quite a bit of EQ applied, and while it's not that hard to find the approximate settings, without it it's never going to sound like the original.
Here ya go, one repeat of my copycat Jump, and one repeat of the original, not necessarily in that order...

i dont get the appeal of the jump sound. it was one of the most plain vanilla synth sounds of the 80's
