Phewwww... the last days were like hell... had some strange bugs in the engine, a lot of headaches and virtually no time for the stuff I wanted to do.
Nevertheless, Filterscape Release Candidate has hit the beta testers. So, the inventive time is mostly over, and now is time to concentrate on platform issues (unless another weird bug comes up, that is)
On previous issues, I've done some tests and stuff on the pc, and I think it's all quite easy. I will not do such a thing like the WaveShell
Cheers,
Urs

Urs, can you give some indication of what the CPU consumption of Zebra PC is or will be like? I remember seeing someone mention they were running 17 Zebras on a G4, so does that mean that Zebra is extremely efficient compared to other Mac synths, and that the PC version will also be ultra-light on CPU?

Hiya Darth...
yeah, Zebra is very efficient for a *modular* synth. But as always, you can blow it all up with the possibilities you have. Of course, if you use all 21 modules plus all 15 or so modulators in polyphonic 4-voice unison mode - where a simple chord drains 12-20 voices - spiced up with all effects, well that gives you less than 20 note polyphony on a 1.8 GHz Mac
However, common sounds (2-3 oscillators, 1-2 filters, decent modulation) gives you very good performance. Maybe not as efficient as a decent bread'n'butter synth, but still quite usable.
The performance on a contemporary PIV or AMD (say 2GHz+) will certainly be twice as good as the one on a G4.
And as it's Friday, I can give you the intrigueing update that Filterscape beta testers have not reported any bugs for the release candidate. I suppose this means that... OMG... I'm finished with the engine!
- three weeks behind my schedule, but then, it has become rock solid... you'll rather find me in front of the pc than in front of the Mac from now on
Cheers,
Urs

all right. Enough of this banter. I've moved over to pc from mac. I've actually sold most of my mac soft synths (since I'm getting Kyma system and needed some money). I did not sell Zebra, because, actually, I realized that it is my favorite Mac soft synth. It just has personality - so while it is not really a VA in the technical sense, on one level it seems the most analog of the mac soft synths to me.
So just port it over already. Stop the excuses. You will surrender your will to me.
(have I had too much wine?)
(p.s. I have to say, I've discovered now Vaz modular and Z3ta+, but I would really like Zebra to join them. So far I think that Rhino is overrated. convince me otherwise. I'm open minded. I just can't get the sequencer to work in the demo, maybe.)

I know we're going way o.t. here but personally I think Rhino is still underrated and underprized compared to it's competitors... - I never use the sequencer though - did you realize that you have syncable multistage envelopes for almost everything?droolmaster0 wrote: think that Rhino is overrated. convince me otherwise. Well, still off topic, but I must comment on Rhino because I'm afraid I was unfair to the poor beast.
Rhino is fantastic. The presets suck. All presets suck always. The only way to judge a synth is by what happens when you begin to mess with it in unwholesome ways. Unless you like using presets, which is ok. The problem with Rhino is that there are so many presets, so I got really bored testing them in obligatory fashion, which I always feel I must do.
Zebra 2 should be issued with NO presets.
Apologies to preset programmers, who show expertise in ways that I'll never have. But if I had that expertise, I would always want to diverge at an early point, and my sounds would never go there. Kind of similar to chess games not being alike...Zebra is a programmer's synth. What I like about it is that I don't even think about making NORMAL sounds while I'm using it. In that spirit, it's similar to why I really love my Evolver.
Anyway, Zebra good. Rhino good. Z3ta+ good. Vaz good. U.S. out of Iraq. (How'd that get in there?)
