Guess what? Yep, you guessed it: the forum stopped sending me reply notifications AGAIN. Man, this is getting stressful...
Anyway, I checked just in time to be warned (hopefully) when the voting starts. Hoepfully. If the forum notifies me. Maybe.

Hello there Mac ... where have you been hiding?? :)

OK Noth .... sorry about the mis-spelling  ... 'Noth' it is then :)

Heay Mac! :)

Sup' dude :)

If you get notified of this post I think we've found the problem.

I don't get every post either, I think it only notifies us when we post directly to others with quotes in use.

But don't 'quote' me on that

IMHO Tattie it's a problem that crops up more often than you think - it's just that this month has been particularly busy with noob's. Bless 'em and welcome all 8)

If you can remember my early days I used to post up about my DAW EQ and other some such. Same stuff, different day. We all get their pretty quickly in the end. Even me :hihi:

I think we're fine with good humour and grace and apologies to MOK for the extra work he's had to put in - hopefully part of the crew now :)

As to synths for March. I saw a suggestion for a Bruno Serrano plug. As he's done so much for free, this gets my vote. I've used Adonis Pro on my Loops setup and this has been fine bar some noise artefacts when playing live (clicks, pops). Certainly unusual compared to our norm anyway...

...failing that I'd suggest an HG Fortune synth to see if anyone can get the drums right  (Actually you can. Boy, I have some boring days!) And just kidding there. OK... :hihi:

Cheers,
Mouxbar

tattiemannie wrote: So, I just want to know, where are we all hanging right now? Do I/we need to be more specific/restrictive when writing up the rules re. Fx? I kinda remember a post way back when it was suggested that a narrowly defined range of Fx should be specified ... eg the classic series, mda plus one free reverb.
I dont really want to go there, but the fact that there has been more discussion/confusion re. permitted Fx in this comp leads me to thinking the proverbial horse has bolted, and we need to shoot the bugger and get a new one! :hihi:

To be honest, it pains me to have to consider this option, cos on the other hand, a bit of freedom over how folks produce stuff adds to the fun ... which ultimately results in more participation. But kinda worrying that that freedom is diluting the purpose of the comp. :?

If you feel that - do your duty :D

Synth1 is rather flexible synth so it shouldn't hurt if you experimentally limit plugins to short list. It might be even challenging to change the list of allowed plugins every 1 or 2 OSC's and learn to use different ones. I'm after minimalism in OSC's and in other things too. Still other people may want more freedom in this area and I totally understand it.

Post

Cheers for the feedback guys ... yeah, it's the norm to have a look at what fx the featured synth has to start with, so of course this will be taken into account.

Mouxbar, your support for a B.Serrano synth puts that idea out in front. :)

The tracks and text files are now zipped and in the process of uploading. :)

.... Oh!!! ... I've just spotted a reply in my donations request thread!! :-o

Post

FWIW, I think a short list of acceptable plugins would be the way to go; and poss. a short, concise, clear list of rules - the longer the rules and the more sub-clauses and what not, the more likely it is that they will be misinterpreted.

Post

Somebody previously said FM synth. I'd be after something simple. What about Eclipse2 http://bserrano.free.fr/Synths_Eclipse2.html or Phobos2 http://bserrano.free.fr/Synths_Phobos2.html ?

Post

I take your point hakey ... I'm not sure the actual rules are overly long, but the launch threads as a whole are a bit long .... a lot to take on board .. particularly for folks new to the comp.

As with everything else in the comp, if there is support for a specified fx plugs list, then I'll go with it. Where we're at now is a compromise between views already stated in the various threads.

But people are coming into the comp, and others move on to other things, so it makes sense to check how that affects the balance of views every so often.

Thats really why I posted my views above, to see if everyone is still happy with the position as is. The feedback helps a lot ... I'll certainly take the responses on board when I write up the next launch.
I'll aim to shorten the post as a whole, clear up the wording of the rules, use different colours of text maybe, and I might even break the whole thing up into 2 or 3 posts ... Intro plus rules/how to submit/prizes and thanks to donors .... and take out a lot of the waffle that you've read in every comp and dont need to read again :hihi:

So cheers to everyone for their comments, if I can improve the setup of the comps in the eyes of the vast majority, then I'll be happy to do so :)

Post

Sorry if my post sounded critical tattiemannie, it certainly wasn't meant that way. You've been doing this for long enough to work out the best way of running things, and I've only entered once (the FWIW was really meant in a 'my view probably isn't worth that much' sense).

Post

Absolutely no probs hakey, I didn't take it that way at all. :)
I welcome comments of all colours ... I get a lot of praise on this thread, so a bit of criticism here and there is not gonna hurt too much.
As I say, I want to run this comp in a way that satisfies as many people's views as poss ... I cant do that if I dont know what those views are. :)

Cheers for your suggestions dwsel ... I'll check those out. No huge hurry to decide, but keep the comments coming .. we can keep this subject running on this thread for a few days yet .. so as not to bog down the voting thread :)

right now though, it's still looking like we're heading for a serrano synth ... unless any of you have other thoughts???

Post

Yes,those B.Serrano synths looks cool. I'll cast my vote on them. :)

Post

Seems to be leaning toward B.serrano, who's synths do look and sound great!

So I think I'll add a + for B.serrano.

I'm looking very much toward Synth1 !!

This synth should not need much in the way of fx as it's LFOs are VERY lively!

Good luck to every one with that one.

I'm kind of like Tattiemannie, if you tell me not to do something, I do it right away. Man, we're just a bunch of spoiled brats.

As to the joke in itself, corny but

However, I must admit this "unnotification" thing is getting to be a bit unnerving... if I never got notified, then it'd be my fault, of course, but this on and off behavior suggests that something is wrong somewhere else...
:?

Yeah, umm, I was indeed NOT notified that you had replied to this, so my theory is shot :(

Lets get'em' Mac! ARGH!
