So, I'm just wondering... how close can we get to SH-101 and 303 style sounds with Diva even though we don't have specialized modules in place? Has anyone been able to successfully make convincing patches?

The current filters miss a clipper for the SH-101 filter and she needs a 24dB filter with Bite-like drivability for 303ish sounds.djanthonyw wrote:So, I'm just wondering... how close can we get to SH-101 and 303 style sounds with Diva even though we don't have specialized modules in place? Regarding the 18dB-myth... the TB has one capacitor that's "off", transposing the first pole an octave up, with further 3 poles being tuned at same frequency (if you neglect filter fm...). So the roll-off is 24dB per octave, but the slope around the cutoff point is a bit flattened out compared to a 4-pole with equally tuned lowpasses.
I think this way Roland could save some voltage. Otherwise the TB might have needed another battery to be able to close the filter. Or maybe the thing would have gotten to hot. But that's just wild guessing, really.
The System 100 filter as well as other diode ladders (EMS Synthi) seem to mostly deploy capacitors of equal capacitance hence have a steeper slope at the cutoff point.

In amongst this collection of Diva demos (@ ~33 secs) there's an attempt at "Everybody Needs a 303".djanthonyw wrote:So, I'm just wondering... how close can we get to SH-101 and 303 style sounds with Diva even though we don't have specialized modules in place? Successful? (no, not really

A quick list of 303 quirks:
- The filter envelope time is shorter for accented notes.
- The filter envelope shape is smoother for accented notes (some combo of Velocity, Multiply, Env and Lag?).
- Filter envelope amount rises with consecutive accented notes (Diva's ADS envelopes do this, but there's no way to switch the behaviour for non accented notes).
- Per-note glide rate.
- The filter!

Nah. SH-3 and SH-5 have similar capacitor ratios , 1x0.022 + 3x0.068 in SH3/5 and 1x0.018 + 3x0.033 in TB. Diode ladders are simply all over the place (my guess: because there isn't exactly a "right" way to do it). There is however difference in loading on top of ladder (3 diode pairs in SH3, 2 pairs in SH5 and one transistor pair in TB), this will effect filter overall gain and position of poles somewhat. BTW, EMS introduced in later versions of their diode VCF switch for "24dB response", that one was interesting (strapping resistor and cap on bottom of ladder IIRC) but I think it will still not behave like buffered filter (root locus will be different when resonance/feedback is changed, but I wont bet on that, have never done the math).Urs wrote:

Shape is the same as in any V/oct synth that has glide. Here is funny part: glide capacitor is driven directly by resistor matrix that forms pitch DAC. Because glide time is about 4xRxC, glide time will depend on note being played (it's like, every note has it's own glide time). I think it would be possible to do that in Diva if u-he team puts glide time as mod destination. The distinctive 303 glide shape
Another interesting option might be V/Hz glide that would result in different shape of pitch glide (maybe it's already implemented for Eco VCO, never compared to be honest)

Amazed I haven't seen this thread before, considering a title like that. Am I the only one who likes Diva just the way she is? I almost think there's a little too much Moog in there already, but that's the way this synth arrived I believe, and so be it. Now the goal is to make some sort of mongrel out of Diva? I'm not sure I 'get' that. I tend to buy products for what they are and not what I want them to be. Haven't we all had enough already of synths trying to be all and do all? The result is often an instrument with very little character of its own.

Nothing that you love about DIVA is going away, there will simply be a couple of additional options. Just ignore them if you don't want them. The Telenator wrote:Amazed I haven't seen this thread before, considering a title like that. Am I the only one who likes Diva just the way she is? p.s. But i want to correct:

Don't know about that, at least 50% of my patches use Bite MK1 (I have somewhere patch, that uses Eco VCO and Bite with reso and and overdive at 11, named "F'cking Finally"; that was milestone for me as far as DSP synths go).The Telenator wrote:I almost think there's a little too much Moog in there already
BTW1, funny thnig, MK1 is least authentic model in Diva and all that, but, thank goodness I say. Real deal is lot of times too gritty and fizzy at extreme settings. I cosider MK1 creamy version of that filter, not subpar to it in any way. And I'm not so fond of all things in Diva, and it is really great that everybody could find something for his/her taste. Bottom line: adding new osc and filter models is completely compatible with "spirit" of Diva (hell, that's the very hart of the synth).
BTW2, Urs, Clemens, who ever is responsible: thank you thank you thank you thank you for leaving noise DC offset as option.
