I'm always stunned that this rumour based on claims by a warez group which cracked Tone2 plugins is still being held in high credibility. Seriously, to the peeps so interested in what the copy protection does in detail, i would recommend to email Tone2, and ask what it does exactly. Either they give out that information, or they don't, which i would consider fair enough, because frankly, i don't believe copy protection measures are a matter of public interest really. If that would be the case, warez groups would really have an easy living at figuring out how to crack plugins.

Good to know. Yes, it's better to stay away from such things -- one little bug in their copy protection may blow unrelated stuff on disk.VariKusBrainZ wrote:But surely this kind of intrusion is just as bad as warez and therefore morally wrong, besides being a very dodgy policy.KingTuck wrote:Inherent to the copy protection is a root folder scan for blacklisted key files. This isn't a big deal, doesn't affect legitimate users and frankly deserves more understanding than a poor mask of "content Tone2, considers illegal". They have a fair, firm copy protection.TheKid wrote:Does the installer for Icarus also read all the hard disk content to delete files that Tone2 considers illegal?
I'll boycott Tone2 based on these comments even though I have no warez
And there were examples of protection systems going out of control with damage already.
Considering that some companies could do very effecient key based copy/protection (u-he for example) I better stick with them.
Murderous duck!

Sorry, but that's nonsense. It doesn't need a copy protection, or a bug in it to delete files on your harddrive. Every software with a potential bug could delete files on your harddrive. Of course your decision if you want to use their software or not, but there's really no need to find odd reasons for doing so.david.beholder wrote:Good to know. Maybe it's because I haven't had a tv antenna for over 16 years, I don't listen to the radio and I don't read magazines, so I leave in a commercial/ad-free environment, but I find it so easy to ignore sales pitches and commercials that I just never pay any attention to any of them. I honestly find it extremely surprising that people really do pay so much attention to it O___O I mean, who gives a damn what somebody trying to sell something is saying? Do you all really judge something - anything - based on what the seller/salesman says about it? Is it really so important to you as to make you place a positive or negative judgement on something?zerocrossing wrote: One thing I will tell you is I will actually listen to the sounds I can make with it and ignore all of Tone2's used car salesman tactics.
When I was a little child my mother taught me that a shop owner or clerk will always say that his products are great, no matter what, because that's how they make a living, so I just had to ignore what they said and look at the product. Either I had the only wise mother in the world, or being pressured all the time by commercials and ads makes one a lot more sensitive to it.
I'm not criticizing, mind you, I'm just trying to analyze this aspect of society, as it sounds pretty peculiar to me...
Anyway, I suggest you guys just listen to an instrument and let your ears decide, don't waste time dreaming on or getting angry at sales pitches that have been around since humanity's inception - your ears know best

and this one

but it appears on a lot of my stuff, for instance the first track on this synthpop album the sounds you can hear till I start singing are all Nemesis, which can give a peculiar flavor to many genres, not just ambient

Literally impossible. There is literally no way a file would be mistakenly flagged and deleted. Every bit of audio software you have has file delete and create functions, the risk would be no greater in any other piece of audio software. If you want to stay away from a synth for an absurd reason like that, it's only your loss.david.beholder wrote:Good to know. I do think these comments are just internet hype but I'd like the developer to comment.
There was also that warez team that disclosed some of the methods Tone2 used a few years back.
Don't know if that had any truth in it.
I personally need as much disuassion as possible to stop me buying more software.
Tone2 are easy for me to ignore as they rarely (ever?) do sales, licences becomes NFR if transferred and they charge for it.

The only for me known problem with Tone2 is that they had problems in combination with iLok. Saurus can instantly shutdown the computer if initialized... but Markus has a patch for this and this behaviour was fixed with Saurus 2, so I expect that all newer released plugins will have this fixed too.
They using watermarking, so some kind of copy protection because they using some unique id coded in the audio phase. But this will not destroy the computer or deleting files
So I don't see problems with Icarus. The only interesting thing is of course the sound + features and if Icarus makes sense for Serum users (maybe also for Waves Codex users).

Why do developers always market their digital plugins with mock hardware/physical keyboard imagery?
Oh I know why - for the same reason that they put "box-art" on .dll files...

Sooo, will existing wavetables (made with audioterm/Serum, etc) work with this?
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

This was confirmed by Markus himself (he explained also that some unique id but no customer id is coded in the audio phase) and it's also a note in the about boxes of Tone2 synth "This product is copy protected and uses audio watermarks" (from the Saurus about box).Ingonator wrote:A watermark added to the audio phase is another Tone2 related rumor that was never proven so far...4damind wrote: They using watermarking, so some kind of copy protection because they using some unique id coded in the audio phase.
But... it's IMO not really a copy protection because it will not prevent users to use unauthorized plugins and nobody knows if this is really implemented...
