yes.

for synth1. I wish Ichiro Toda would come back if only to know hes still around and well..

outside of whats been mentioned.. look for patch/preset and song/demo competitions as well as (if you actually have the free time and are technical) beta tests.

even things like the monthly competitions here on kvr you can win software. other websites have contests too.. its all about tuning into what the audience wants (judges) versus how many people are entering.

you probably wont get all/most of what you want. However, if you're pretty good you can potentially get a respectful setup after a few years...

Yes, when compared to softwares.
But if you insist on it for its flexibility, allround capability and ease of use, Fantom S - hands down.

Unless you run a laptop set that would do the "same" thing as a keyboard like the Fantom, there are certain advantage with using a keyboard/hardware romplers.

At last count, I had somewhere between (US)$70-80,000.00 in music gear. But I've been at this for 20 years now. There is so much fantastic free software available these days, that if I were just starting out, I would find very little reason to spend my money. I've put this theory to the test, and made songs using only free stuff. It worked out great!

Don't drink, don't smoke. Very forgiving wife. One young daughter who consumes all my free time. I have an $80,000 studio gathering dust. The last song I wrote was for Mothers Day... Mothers Day before last, that is!

I looked at the Fantoms with the idea of replacing my XP80 and XV5080... And ended up not doing it! There are a few things I absolutely, completely hate about the new Fantoms, that, despite whatever new featues they may bring, didn't constitute an "upgrade" for me. In particular, the Fantom keyboards are pretty good, "just" pretty good, not great. Whereas, my old XP80 keyboard is one of the best synth-action boards I've ever had my hands on.

Sure the synth engine in the Fantom is a little better than what's in my XV5080, I guess, and it does have a nice sequencer (that I would never use), but it still didn't move me to upgrade. Bear in mind that I made this decision *after* going to the store with the idea of getting a new board. I ended up buying other things, and it motivate me to take better care of my XP80.

There is an abundance of free software and free software developers that call kvr "home". ALL of the software I use now is a result of coming to kvr. Most of it is free stuff (Traction 1.6 NFR, Kjarhaus Classic Series, Betabugs, KTgranulator, all the smartelectronix stuff, mda, Crystal

, Rez synth, all of Ugo's stuff, Bassline, ...well you get the idea, the list goes on and on and on...

This is the key here. Why do you need stuff, seriously? Why would you ever EVER need more than one sequencer? Find one, learn it, stick to it, and write well in it

Yep, it's a lot of $$$ for a hobby, but if you

1) start with Sonar 5 SE (and add Live later)
2) add EWLQ Silver
3) add a few of Voxengo plugs or an UAD1 card
4) add Stylus or BFD (not both at the same time)
5) buy Scarbee downloadable J-Bass (you'll need a sampler as well tho)

you'll have enough for a start for around 1300$
