just talk low for one character and high for another and with a lisp for the third... doing voices isn't that hard is it? also you're you're wrong about formant shifting being the "classic vocoder effect", it sounds very different, look into it further, if you're going to use an effect that will probablly be the one.

All depends on the voices you have/use AND the CORRECT writing.
(Some voices have around 100 mb of data each and sound very good.)

they have a "cheap" version called Melodyne UNO.

I know, its rather hard sometimes...I really am proud that you did not do the *pull my finger* joke which is the most common trick on audion forums.
