honestly though, music is generally defined as any type of auditory stimulation which induces activity in rythymic pattern recognition centers of the brain, which is usually pleasurable. most people find it pleasurable to move thier bodies in a ryhthmic motion, and many people find it somehow much easier to understand speech or other forms of communication if it is done ryhthmiclly. there are several theories about why 'music' tends to be enjoyable, but the two most notable are first, that music stimulates the pattern recognition systems in the brain and increases general activity, which is pleasurable. second, that we have developed a desire for ryhthms over our evolution. banging on rocks, digging, lighting a fire, that kind of thing. they are both connected and both make perfect sence. humans are extremely good at pattern recognition, perhaps the best creature in the world. (which seems to make sence.. since we're like arse-kicking every other creature.) but i think most creatures have the same pattern recognition systems, and experiance enjoyment by activation of these systems. if you talk to any animal rythmically (or make sounds, pss pss pss, here kitty kitty), they tend to like you more than if not.
some people might note we also find enjoyment in seemingly less predictable and assumeably less rythmic sequences. however, in my opinion these sequences most likely activate the pattern recognition systems even more, as they attempt to unravel what they assume is simply a highly complex pattern. this can be argued for by mention of the fact there is nothing in this universe which is actually truely random. everything is pattern, everything is predictable, it is only that the complexity of some systems are beyond the threshold of decodability via our recognition systems.
as we evolve further, i think our abilities of pattern recognition will develop more and more, and most likely, (as can be noted even now) music will by enjoyed more when it is built of more complex patterns and longer sequences.
