Linux success stories

A good example is in the graphics side of the movie industry. Most of the special effects and graphics are now being done with Linux versions of programs that I am unfamiliar with, but I do know that they cost several thousand per copy.
Companies such as Pixar, Industrial Light and Magic, Weta etc,etc now use programs running on Linux for recent movies such as Lord of the Rings, Nemo, Shrek,etc,etc.

Totally agree, and to top it of with the free stuff, what about Gimp and Inkscape? And people say pro software for Linux doesn't exist... It's as stupid as saying that Linux is programmed by MS programmers in their work hours...

I think the most stupid thing we can do is to underestimate Linux. Linux is growing fast, allthough some analysts claim not fast enough, and Opensource will make it even better, more heads to read the code and be critic to it.

I agree that Linux is not for the "free"ies only, but thank god that there is some of them out there.

Good software is good software, free, share or pay ware. There are is a huge amount of MS politics involved in influencing software companies as to whether they do a Linux/Unix port. We all know that MS just has to mention cutting a company off from potential windows sales to influence and make them adhere to the MS company policies.

Linux has proven itself as a viable OS in use as internet servers, database servers, and as I mentioned in the movie industry. Anyone who
fails to acknowledge that reality is simply being an apologist for MS.

The pig has taxied down the runway and is now in flight. How far it gets and where it goes is the only question.

Mmh... Linux is the leader in the server market, most of the internet runs on linux or bsd servers. Linux become a growing market on the desktop. With kde 3x, OpenOffice, Firefox, Gimp...

I have no problems to see Windows or MacOS as a gaming or musicean OS and Linux as a workhorse for network related stuff or on the desktop.
But.. I can see in the future a distribution focussed on music! Where Alsa, Jack, VST and other support is build-in. Perhaps behind a company like yamaha (steinberg) or mackie...

This time Linux is (unfortunately) far away to become a OS for musiceans like Windows or MacOS. But that doesn't mean that this cannot be changed in the future.
