Wow, so according to that screenshot you can not only input notes but you can view what you've input too. WOW! What an incredible feature! And in full color! No more green monochrome monitors for me!

Why did you do Server 2003? Stability? For work? for the hell of it? For the average end-user it's overkill.

It's a work pc - had to install 2003 on one disk to run Sharepoint Server and IIS6. I know it's subjective, but 2003 'feels' quicker than xp - a default install of 2003 doesn't have all the server services running, and doesn't have some of the crap that xp does. Apart from that, it's very similar to xp when using it as a workstation. I still need to compare running audio apps on each though.

I have killed 2003 once though - tried to create a bluetooth pan between my laptop and xp desktop - blue screened them both when i clicked connect!

WOW! I just got a new Dell M70 for work and I had considerably less trouble partitioning the drive and installing Red Hat Enterprise 4. It was every bit as easy as Windoze and nearly as fast. All I did aftertwards was install the latest nVidia drivers for my QuadroFX1400 and the RPM's for the latest build of WindowMaker and I was away. I love it! [but I can't really use it for much beyond surfing the web at the mo'].

Funnily enough, I've spent the whole day trying to install Linux on it. DL'd Demudi, but it wouldn't recognize my hard drive (???), so tried Debian, and then x-server wouldn't start. Finally worked out why, but can't get sound to work and can't get a higher resolution than 1024 x 768. Guess I'm going to have to track down drivers for (at minimum) the graphics and sound, and preferably for bluetooth, wireless, touchpad, adsl (if they exist), and work out how to install them (I'm a Linux newb). If I can't get the screen and audio working by lunchtime tomorrow, I'm formatting the disk!

Which kernal did you install- 2.4 or 2.6? 2.6 is the one that will actally play nice with modeately current hardware. I tried installing Planet CCRMA FC1 a while ago, and the installer locked up because 2.4 doesn't like SATA. I've installed several 2.6 based distros since then without too much trouble (or any at all, really).

I've no idea - just dl'd the lastest Demudi and Debian distros, so I assume 2.6.

To be honest, I've not really got much idea what I'm doing (or why!), and it honestly seems to me that Linux isn't much of a leap from Windows 3.1 - I'd love to be shown otherwise though.

Why Debian? I've looked at a couple of Debian-based distro's but they seem awfully hard compared to Red Hat based ones. This is the first time I have installed Linux on anything in 5 years or so and I never really felt like I was anythign but a Linux noob. RPM's make installing things easy, there is no way I could compile anything from a tar.gz myself.

I originally chose to install Demudi after Fake's posting on how to get VST's running - that was the distro he used. When that didn't work, I chose Debian, for no particular reason at all - I just went to distrowatch and looked a the top ten. Ruled out Ubuntu and Knoppix (I'd tried them before and wasn't too impressed) and SUSE and Fedora wanted me to download four or five cd's - I like the fact that I could download a minimum installer for Debian and let it get what else it needed of the net.

What would you recommend?
