well to do a really good distortion would require some moderately complex processing, but not major oversampling, 2x should be enough. the problem is most of the effects you've used dont do the decimation right, oversampling is just rendering two samples in place of one source sample, but you then need to transform those two samples back into one output sample. to do that, you need to filter all the harmonics above 1/4 the oversample rate to below the noise floor (120db or so.) this is very difficult to do and i've outlined basically, a perfect decimation is going to always take the same amount of time as in a good audio editor. open your favorate audio clip editor and convert a 96k audio file to 48k. i imagine this doesnt perform anywhere near to realtime even on your mega-fast pc. to do a decent effect using complex methods and moderate decimation on 2x oversampling would require a lot of cpu power as well, although much less than a perfect decimation. most people dont realize where the real sound of most distortion effects comes from anyway.

1) eq on the output via tone controls or otherwise
2) noise

most of the horrible 'digital' sound you get is masked by noise in the analog versions. yes, the analog versions are much better, but with all the noise there you cant tell the damn difference anyway. i'm sure the aliasing is below 48db in most digital distortion effects, while the noise floor of most analog distortion effects when cranked up is usually greater than 48db.

if i made a distortion effect using the moderate quality methods i've outlined, it took twice the cpu power of most digital distortions, had slightly better quality, and had a 36db noise floor, would anyone be impressed?

i dont think so.

you guys should just run out through a real distortion pedal instead :)

those virtual-ground 9v diode clipper pedals suck really bad in my opinion. something like http://xhip.cjb.net/library/images/overdriver.png (my design) sounds much better and with lower noise.

anyway, ranting now am i?

I had one of these and it was f**king great!!! I wish I had never got rid of it!

I just overhauled both amps and I am really satisfied with the way they look now

hehe thanks..... well no need to buy AT2 just for the GUI anymore... :hihi:

you've got extreme perspective on the knobs but not the text. and how is it we don't see the bottom of the knobs? if the perspective is so extreme, should we see the top of the amp? i'll shut up now

yup you're right...

It's just a very difficult thing to do 3D graphics in a 2D amp like Photoshop....

I'll try to make the knobs look better... but honestly if I can't pull it off... I'm pretty satisfied with these latest versions (eventhough the perspective on the knobs is not absolutely right)

it's a beta bugs plug... it's supposed to look semi cartoony.

actually I take back what I just said and refer to this instead :hihi:

That GUI is beautiful. It may not look especially realistic, but it sure looks fun and that's way more important to me. I'm definately looking forward to this. I've got so many amp sims already, but there's always room for one more. I can never get enough textures to blend in with my real amps and besides, sometimes I actually want digital sounding distortion.

Post

I love it too. It is not realistic because it isn't meant to be, but it still looks absolutely gorgeous. You damn fine GUI makers, making me want to try VST's even if they aren't my thing. ;-)

Please code a Mac VST version.
Coffee please, black, no sugar.

dahling.......that first one is making me pine away for my old Orange
Graphic 100.

Cheers.........CL
