No you aren't if you stick with something like posihfopit (mixing), PLpar (mastering), nyquist (alternative mixing EQ).proletkult wrote:Suddenly I'm overflowing with choice.
Those lot are free. The best commercial EQ right now is quite likely the Hydratone and it's got a certain edge over all plugin EQs. Maybe you might like the MasterQ as well. Then there's voxengo HarmoniEQ and GlissEQ2 for more EQ pallette.
Most of these have demos or are cheap so do try them.
You can hoard your VSTplugin directory with EQs, free or commercial. Do that only if you want to prove yourself why the rest of them are either quite shit, average, or redundant compared to the ones mentioned here.

Hydratone shines in boosting. Do not forget Urs.

Don't forget Urs EQs if you really like paying exorbitant sums for average sound and fancy graphics.RapRogue wrote:Do not forget Urs.

I've always had trouble to *really* grasp the "sound of an EQ". For me it's more like "does what I want it to" or "does not what I want it to". It's a tool.
So based on this criterium my favourite is the UAD-1 Cambridge EQ.

If you need an eq that add sparkle, definitely check out Voxengo HarmoniEQ...

You tend not to be able to instantiate an outboard EQ more than once... Of course it's good to have different 'flavours' to add variety to a mix so it might make a nice addition, but you'd need to burn the EQ into each treated track which is a faff unless you have a patchbay or something.lex_strooder wrote:(and why not get a outboard, even the cheepest ones rule any soft in 44.1)

my favourite eq´s:
for mixing: sonalksis eq and nyquist.
for mastering: hydratone (for boosting and sweetening) and psp masterq for correcting frequency peaks and so on. it´s a great tool for that because of the extreme narrow q´s it can operate on...

yes... and its also hard to tell what eq is needed on a soloed track... but in return you get air and good bass soundsgriels wrote:You tend not to be able to instantiate an outboard EQ more than once... Cubase sx3. done a number of tracks over the Xmas and the mixes aren't doing them justice.lex_strooder wrote:sorry for asking this late in the thread but what host do you use and how much are you willing to spend on a good EQ (and why not get a outboard, even the cheepest ones rule any soft in 44.1)

what i seem to end up doing.Kingston wrote: You can hoard your VSTplugin directory with EQs, free or commercial. Do that only if you want to prove yourself why the rest of them are either quite shit, average, or redundant compared to the ones mentioned here.
and likewise hydra's my favourite, i find its sound sticks out from other eqs, for me it has the most low end punch and smoothest highs (which makes it good if thats what you need). although i find it shit for precision, and cumbersome to use on pc currrently.
harmonieq is another interesting one, which sticks out for its different character, and is not comparible to anything else. so definately worth checking out to see if it gives you what you need proletkult. also glisseq, which is one of the few left i havent tried yet, but i would imagine its fairly unique.
otherwise i find most traditional minimum phase algorithmic eqs to sound pretty similar, and dont rate their differences important enough compared to my engineering precision, or lack of.
