That's a first for us, isn't it? :P :D

is it? (can't remember having had an argument with you before although it's absolutely possible :hihi:)
We've had some discussions before, where we were on opposite ends of the spectrum as far as thought. However, I've always at least enjoyed hearing the other point of view put to me in an intelligent manner. That doesn't always happen here. 8)

Word! - thanks! :-D

Ok so I think I'm in love with Tracktion. It just makes so much sense. It's exactly how I want a sequencer to look like. Everything flows from left to right! It's perfect and it's fast and the interface glides smoothly. Thankfully I'm still a n00b so the intermittent hiss isn't bothering me at all.

And it's only $200! I mean..not ONLY, but like..compared to like 799 british pounds? I'll take $200 any day.

No substitute for looking at all the available hosts and picking one for yourself!

Just another suggestion, not free but.... I got myself a new midi-keyboard from Ediroll and it came with Sonar LE which is quite a capable version of the full package (so far the only real limitation I found is the 8 VSTi max limit). As far as I know it is bundled with all the new Ediroll keyboards so if you haven't got a keyboard yet this is something to consider. I got the 61 keys version for just 280 Euro. Together with a fully working version of Sonar that is a steal to me :D

If you choose a smaller version of the keyboard you get even lower prices ;)
CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, Moved to Reason and Rack Extensions exclusively (from Reaper and VSTs) several years ago.

Ha! Jimmymus, glad to hear you saw the light with Tracktion (sorry jens  ), and as I said, IMNSHO Tracktion and EnergyXT compliment each other unbelievably well. It's really worth it to actually hunt down a cheaper copy of tracktion (online, second hand, whatever) so you have money to license eXT and support its developer, Jorgen Aase, who really deserves it. You just have to take a look at the energyXT forum here at kvr to have an idea of the amount and quality of the work he's doing (hats off here).

So, all in all, you seem to be making the right decisions :D keep it up!

Cheers,

JJ.
The mind boggles.

yes, you're absolutely right about this - SX just can't keep up with eXT regarding many features :-D
(I corrected your grammar b.t.w. - and no: you don't have to thank me for that)
? What was that outburst all about then? I'll avoid a public slanging match and tackle this with a pm. If you have an axe to grind, I'd like to know what it is.

We are still starving of a free,nice,easy,not-so-buggy vst host/sequencer. :(

Though 'half developer-half human' has developed one, almost free, called 'EnergyXT'.
Tools are tools, they don't produce anything...

Well there's Reaper http://www.cockos.com/reaper/
However it's only in the early development stages, but getting about 5 updates a week right now!
So it would be worth downloading anyway just to get used to it so when it's midi specs are sufficient you will have a good grip on it's workflow wich is very good even with basic midi functions.
It will be $20 when it hits 1.0,but at 0.68 as of right now it's freeware.
By no means am I saying it's midi can be compared to cubase.Just pointing out it's one to watch.

I noticed that one earlier. It's by the guy that wrote Muzys, isn't it? It DOES seem to have a slightly different paradigm as far as MIDI goes. I'm still not sure what to think of it, but the price sure does seem right. It will be one to watch.

Edit: Actually, this doesn't seem to be the one that I was thinking about. Anyone know the link to the one the Muzys guy was working on?

This one, however, looks very interesting too. :-)

It seems that the last freeware version of Delta SP that I mentioned earlier is about as close as it gets for free. (When Frieve gets more stable, it will also be worth a look.) But overall, you are right... As far as "FREE" goes, there's not much available in the Windows OS world. (Linux is a different story).

The good news is that there appears to be a lot of great options in the under $50 range. :-)

Yes,it is not that hopeless situation. And I vote for XT in that price range. Especially, when you get XT2 for free if you buy now.

This is a very powerful, free, modular, sequencer + all the synths and effects and everything you will ever need.

It is VST and ReWire and ASIO compatible: just have to get used to the REALLY quirky interface--especially with MIDI--but I know many people who use it.

If your computer can run Cubase SX3, then you can use this.

Yeah, if I wanted to get into free trackers, there are a lot to choose from:

Skale
reViSiT
Psycle
Open ModPlug Tracker
BeRo Tracker
AXS Win Tracker

and of course, as you mentioned... Buzz.

Personally, I don't enjoy the tracker interface. I find a piano roll much more intuitive. But as you say, they DO exist and they ARE for free. :-)
